Celebrating the Life of a Dedicated Peacebuilder – Mary Montague

On September 20, 2024, the world lost a true peacebuilder, the beloved Co-Founder of TIDES Training, Mary Montague. Her leadership and legacy remains a force throughout North Ireland and globally through the people she trained. Mary was a force- a white-knuckle mediator with a twinkle in her eyes and always ready to dance. Her extraordinary capacity to connect and build trust with every one, alongside her ability to design the interventions needed for the moment and the context, made her a sought-after advisor.

She was the European Representative for MBBI, a MBBI Consultant, and on the faculty of the IPTI program. In all of these capacities, she delivered peacebuilding and mediation interventions globally. Mary loved community capacity development and had a particular interest in mediation and conflict resolution through designing and implementing mediative interventions to address highly contentious and volatile emergency situations. She was a Restorative Practitioner and has supported the transition of armed groups, communities, and civil society towards peace. Inspiring poetry, a saying for every occasion, a story from Northern Ireland for every situation – these were Mary’s gifts to the world!
