Maciej Witek is a Rotary Peace Fellow at the International Christian University in Tokyo, Japan. Originally from Poland, he holds a B.A. in Cultural Studies from the Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology in Warsaw, Poland, and an M.A. in International Relations from Tokyo International University, Kawagoe, Japan. Prior to starting the current fellowship, Maciej already spent 4 years in Japan. Through different roles as a teaching assistant at universities, high school teacher, and global education project leader he promoted intercultural exchange, respect for diversity, and human rights. In 2021 Maciej reached his long-term dream and was one of the volunteers for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, providing interpretation for athletes and international media during press conferences, interviews, and medal ceremonies. It had been his goal since 2013, however at the time due to his personal situation it seemed absolutely out of reach. After actually turning it into reality Maciej got inspired to come back to Poland and give something back to his local community. He is passionate about supporting young people in pursuing their own dreams and overcoming obstacles they might encounter. Back in Poland, Maciej worked for a local NGO, foundation Dla Dobra Dzieci, supporting children and foster families, including families of refugees who arrived in Poland from Ukraine in early 2022. He also founded a small educational project Global Society – aiming to create opportunities for representatives of different cultures to interact and learn from each other. Maciej is also a former diplomatic trainee from the Embassy of Poland, and a Delegation of the European Union to Japan. Experience gained while working at those institutions led him to join the secretariat of the Global Peacebuilding Association of Japan, and Kyoto Peacebuilding Center as a Communication Officer and report writer, where he continues to support academic exchange and dialogue between scholars in Japan and around the world.
