SUMMARY:Climate Diplomacy Opportunities in a World with Pandemics
DESCRIPTION:Join us in our next conversation on Climate Diplomacy Opportunities in a World with Pandemics by Saleem H. Ali\, on Wednesday\, September 30\, 2020\, at 12:00 PM EDT (UTC -4). This webinar is the fourth webinar in our CCPP webinar series. In this webinar\, Professor Ali discusses how following the pandemic\, climate diplomacy might create opportunities to constructively examine science\, specifically ecological health\, in order to create other pathways for joint gains for climate change mitigation.  \nRegister here \nAs the world considered ways to coordinate the global response to the COVID pandemic\, the climate change action plan negotiations from the United Nations have been delayed. How might we consider climate diplomacy in a world where people may become more hesitant to live a low carbon intensity lifestyle due to fear of cities and public transport? Might there be opportunities to consider science with greater care following the pandemic which could open other avenues for joint gains for climate change mitigation? How might we link ecological health to climate change negotiations most constructively in 2021 and beyond? \nRegister here \n  \n\nProfessor Saleem H. Ali is the director of the Minerals\, Materials and Society Program and Blue and Gold Distinguished Professor of Energy and the Environment at the University of Delaware. He is also a senior fellow at Columbia University’s Center on Sustainable Investment. Selected as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2011\, he also serves on the United Nations International Resource Panel and the Science Panel of the Global Environment Facility\, the world’s largest multilateral trust fund for the environment held in trusteeship by the World Bank. Professor Ali received his doctorate in environmental planning from MIT\, a master’s in environmental law and policy from Yale University and a bachelor’s in chemistry\, summa cum laude\, from Tufts University. His books include Environmental Diplomacy (with Larry Susskind\, Oxford University Press) and Treasures of the Earth: Need\, Greed and a Sustainable Future (Yale University Press). \n  \n_________________________________________________________________________ \nSpecial thanks to Charalee Graydon a dedicated member of the MBBI Climate Change Policy Project (CCPP). She has attended the Conference of Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) twice\, the COP 23 in Bonn\, Germany\, and the COP 24 in Katowice\, Poland. She first joined as a member of MBBI 5 years ago when she was working on a collaborative group focusing on climate change. She is also active in the Children & Youth Alternative Dispute Resolution Working Group\, and United Nations Multilateral Working Group. She considers it important to work with young people to develop peaceful models for climate change dispute resolution. \nCharalee is most interested in climate change as a global issue. Her advocacy in finding solutions revolves around her wide academic expertise; She is a part of the faculty at Euclid University and focuses on international law\, climate change\, and dispute resolution. Further\, she has authored multiple articles on the legal structures of the Paris Agreement\, the US’s decision to leave the Paris Agreement\, international law in fostering cooperation on the Paris Agreement\, and international piracy\, one of her largest selection of articles is about the combination of creative arts and climate change.

SUMMARY:Inner Stillness and Peacebuilding
DESCRIPTION:In this interactive session\, Bradley Roth\, Chair of MBBI-NY and teacher of “Mediation & Meditation\,” and Renata Keller\, dialogue facilitator and film director\, will explore with participants the relationship between inner stillness and peacebuilding. Renata’s new film “In the Fire of Dancing Stillness – Reflections with Vimala Thakar” is an homage to Indian thought leader\, social activist and visionary Vimala Thakar\, who emphasized that an inner revolution borne from the discovery of inner stillness is necessary to create durable peace. The session will include moments of stillness\, excerpts from Vimala’s books\, film clips highlighting her perspective on life and facilitated breakout sessions. \nSpeakers Bios: \nRenata Keller is a filmmaker and dialogue facilitator based in Berlin and Switzerland. She has worked in visual arts for over thirty years and was until recently  also the CEO and art director of the German philosophical quarterly magazine ‘evolve‘. She runs various Salons in Berlin and gives dialog seminars worldwide. \nWith a master’s degree in Applied Imagination at University of Arts in London\, Renata went on to study documentary filmmaking. Renata’s lifelong pursuit of philosophical and spiritual questions\, along with her interest in women’s development\, led her to Gerda Lerner’s work and inspired the creation of Why Women Need to Climb Mountains (2016). In the film True Healing Arises in Freedom (2019)\, she accompanies the Biochemist Dr. Roger Kalbermatten in his research about the nature of healing plants and their relationship with us humans. A significant meeting with the Indian philosopher\, mystic and social activist Vimala Thakar and questions about the changing values of our times has led her to work on the just-released film In the Fire of Dancing Stillness – Reflections with Vimala Thakar (2020). \nBradley Roth is an attorney\, mediator\, and co-founder and chair of Mediators Beyond Borders International – New York (MBBI-NY).  He teaches the course “Mediation & Meditation” at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice\, where he is an adjunct lecturer and from which he received a 2019-2020 Teaching Excellence Award.  Bradley is both a long-time meditator and mediator.  After graduating with honors from John Hopkins University with a degree in Philosophy\, he traveled to India\, and upon his return to the States dedicated himself to his spiritual interests while working in a series of jobs ranging from environmental activism to nonprofit management to law firm recruiting.  He then attended and graduated from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law\, where he participated in the school’s Mediation Clinic.  He has mediated in civil and small-claims courts\, community mediation centers\, and at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). In addition to his leadership of MBBI-NY\, he is an active participant in MBBI’s United Nations Multilateral Working Group (UNMWG) and its Internship Task Force.  Bradley is also a member of the Project for Integrating Spirituality\, Law\, and Politics (PISLAP).

SUMMARY:Conflict Analysis and Early Warning Early Responses (EWER)\, Day 2
DESCRIPTION:Once seen outwardly as a bastion of democratic institutions\, freedom of expression and relative peace\, the underlying realities of unresolved conflict in the United States have surfaced and the potential for violence is undeniable.\n \nAs peacebuilders familiar with conflict analysis\, it has been clear for some time that without intervention\, the US in on a collision course toward violent conflict. Deep racial divisions\, polarized discourse\, misinformation campaigns\, and the erosion of public trust have all been exacerbated by a global pandemic and rising unemployment. These same circumstances in other countries would have brought international monitoring teams into the country.  \n \nThe time for MBBI’s global community of mediators and peacebuilders to come together is now. The conditions are alarming in the lead up to the elections but it is also abundantly clear that no matter who wins\, the need for community cohesion has never been greater. \n \nSo how do we as mediators and peacebuilders step forward in this time of need? \nWe demonstrate C.A.L.M. during crisis. We Connect in Adversity with Leadership in Mediation. We build on existing tools and adapt them for this unique context.  \nStrategically\, we are fortunate to have the guidance of Alice Wairimu Nderitu\, an extraordinary peacebuilder\, to assist in this endeavor. \nAlice Wairimu Nderitu is the 2018 Pluralism Award winner and the founder of the globally recognized Uwiano Platform for Peace. Launched in July 2010 with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)\, the SMS-based information gathering and action programme were designed to ensure that the Kenyan referendum and elections were violence free. Uwiano -meaning “cohesion” in KiSwahili- also deployed a pool of volunteer monitors to hotspots across the country and established peace committees and defuse tensions.  \nAlice Nderitu is a pioneer in the field of peacebuilding and violence prevention. She has served as Commissioner with the Kenya’s National Cohesion and Integration Commission and as a Founding Member and co-Chair of the Uwiano Platform for Peace\, which was pivotal in preventing violence surrounding the 2013 Elections in Kenya. Currently working as a Senior Advisor and as Lead Mediator in Nigeria for the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue (HD)\, she is widely published as an author and academic and has developed Kenya’s only curricular training manual for teachers on the topic of inclusion and conflict prevention. \nSadly\, the application of such measures are now needed in the US context. The indicators and potential for serious problems propel us to step forward with the best that the field has developed; prevention and intervention tools such as Reflective Structured Dialogue\,  Training for Active Bystanders and Joint Monitoring.  \nWe are proposing an Early Warning Early Response mechanism developed specifically for the United States.\n\nOn Sep 22nd and 23rd\, Alice will facilitate a presentation and discussions on adapting the Uwiano Platform for Peace for the USA. Included are online tools for reporting and tracking evidence of hate speech\, incitement\, and other forms of violence via text\, images\, voice\, and video. When incoming messages are received\, they may be placed into one of six categories: informative\, threat\, positive message\, hate speech\, coded message\, or incitement to violence.\n\nOur collective infrastructure of peacebuilders and 300 community mediation centers as well as the crisis lines in every county across the country provide tremendous support for what is possible when we creatively unite to support full and free elections as well as mechanisms for addressing events in the months following Nov 3rd. 2020. \nIf you’ve ever felt called to prevent violent conflict and act as a catalyst for positive transformation\, this is the time.  \nYou are the community and this is the opportunity. \nPlease join us to complete this analysis will the full strength of our diverse skills and perspectives which will contribute to our preparation\, active engagement\, and development of much-needed tools for conflict prevention and intervention. \nClick Here to Register for the Full Event!
