SUMMARY:Our Brains at War: The Neuroscience of Conflict and Peacebuilding
DESCRIPTION:Engage in this exciting webinar\, Our Brains at War: The Neuroscience of Conflict and Peacebuilding. Led by Mari Fitzduff\, this webinar title suggests that we need a radical change in how we think about war\, leadership\, and politics. Most of us\, political scientists included\, fail to appreciate the extent to which instincts and emotions\, rather than logic\, factor into our societal politics and international wars. Many of our physiological and genetic tendencies\, of which we are mostly unaware\, can all too easily fuel our antipathy towards other groups\, make us choose ‘strong’ leaders over more mindful leaders\, assist recruitment for illegal militias\, and facilitate even the most gentle of us to inflict violence on others. Drawing upon the latest research from emerging areas such as behavioural genetics\, biopsychology\, and social and cognitive neuroscience\, this book identifies the sources of compelling instincts and emotions\, and how we can acknowledge and better manage them so as to develop international and societal peace more effectively. \nThis 90-minute conversation event will be on March 22th\, 2022\, at 2:00 pm EDT (UTC -4) | 6:00pm UK Time (GMT). SUMMARY:Truthtelling\, Mediation\, and the Prevention of Mass Atrocities
DESCRIPTION:Engage in this exciting webinar: “Truthtelling\, Mediation and the Prevention of Mass Atrocities.” Kathy Kelly will look at the role militarism has played in aggressively marketing wars against Iraq and Afghanistan and consider the advantages for diplomacy if weapons and war strategies are taken out of the “tool-kit.” This 90-minute conversation event will be on January 12th\, 2022\, at 4 pm EST (UTC -5). Please use the Time Zone Converter to determine when this engaging conversation will be in your time zone. \nRegister here!\nSpeaker Bio\nKathy Kelly \n \nKathy Kelly\, a peace activist and author\, made over two dozen trips to Afghanistan from 2010 – 2019\, living with Afghan Peace Volunteers in a working class neighborhood in Kabul.  \nShe and her companions in various peace team delegations believe that where you stand determines what you see.  \nKelly lived with families in Baghdad throughout the 2003 Shock and Awe invasion and during the first weeks of the U.S. occupation. From 1996 to 2003\, along with numerous Voices in the Wilderness activists\, Kathy defied the U.S. sanctions against Iraq by delivering medicines and medical relief supplies to hospitals and families in Iraq. She first visited Iraq as part of the Gulf Peace Team which camped near the Iraq-Saudi border during the 1991 Desert Storm bombing and invasion of Iraq.  \nKathy’s efforts have sometimes led her into U.S. prisons as a “convict.” She believes each of three prison terms in U.S. federal prisons were among the most educational experiences of her life\, helping her understand the profound racism and cruelty inherent in the “prison-industrial complex.”  \n Kathy is now campaigning for an international treaty to ban weaponized drones.
