SUMMARY:Reflective Practice & the Structured Reflective Instrument (SRI) for Improving 3rd-Party Interventions
DESCRIPTION:Join Michael Lang and Dr. Tzofnat Peleg-Baker for Reflective Practice & the Structured Reflective Instrument (SRI) for Improving 3rd-Party Interventions. This event will be September 7th 2023\, at 9am PT / 12pm ET / 5pm UK Time. \nRegister here!\nWebinar Description: \nDo you ever wonder? \n\nHow do I improve the quality of my work? And how can I do it better?\nHow can I know what interventions and methods best benefited the parties\, which were off the mark\, and why?\nHow do I learn from frustrating experiences\, and how can I duplicate my successes?\n\nMichael and Tzofnat have been developing and employing Reflective Practice (RP) to support 3rd party interveners’ work for a few decades. In their recent article\, they make a case for the significance of attending to implicit goals and issues in addition to explicit ones in conflict interventions and the essential role of RP in building excellence in practice. The multidimensional Structured Reflective Instrument (SRI) was designed to help improve our ability to address the complex social-psychological underlying issues driving conflict decisions and outcomes. \nThe SRI can be used for preparation\, during and after an intervention\, and is most effective for learning from our experiences and improving practice if used systematically and with colleagues. Collective reflection boosts the learning experience\, improves skills through exchanging perspectives\, and is a vital and practical tool for building professional excellence. \nMichael and Tzofnat lead reflective peer learning groups globally\, engaging peacebuilders\, dialogue and conflict professionals\, mediators\, and organizational consultants in RP. They also run an RP SRI Certificate program that provides a safe\, shared space for practicing RP principles and the SRI. It is an opportunity to learn reflectively with colleagues. \nOn September 7th\, 2023\, Michael and Tzofnat will offer a taste of their reflective practice approach. \nBIOS \n Michael D. Lang\, J.D. mlang@mediate.com \nFor over 40 years\, Michael has mediated family\, workplace\, and organizational disputes. Michael created one of the first graduate programs in conflict resolution in the US at Antioch University in 1992 and served in a similar role at Royal Roads University in Victoria\, BC. For 6 years\, he was Editor-in-Chief of Mediation Quarterly (now Conflict Resolution Quarterly). He serves as an Editorial Board member and Special Advisor to the Journal of Mediation and Applied Conflict Management at NUI- Maynooth. \nHe has authored The Practitioner’s Guide to Reflective Practice in Conflict Resolution (2019) and co-authored The Making of a Mediator: Developing Artistry in Practice (2000). \nMichael currently facilitates monthly online reflective practice groups for dozens of conflict professionals in 8 countries. \n Tzofnat Peleg-Baker\, Ph.D. inclusiveconflictintl@gmail.com \nDr. Tzofnat Peleg-Baker is an applied social psychologist. Her multidisciplinary work is informed by psychology\, communication\, sociology\, transformative learning\, human development\, conflict\, and philosophy. To help shift divisive habits to relating with dignity\, cooperating\, and co-creating sustainable connections\, she translates behavioral science research into evidence-based\, practical tools. Tzofnat earned a Ph.D. and M.A. in social psychology and an M.A. in communication and learning. She researches dialogue\, relational and conflict transformation\, and decision-making in third-party interventions. Tzofnat is the author of professional and academic articles and book chapters and has taught undergraduate\, graduate\, and MBA students and led transformative organizational processes for over two decades. She facilitates monthly peer learning and reflective groups with third-party interveners\, Ombuds\, consultants\, mediators\, and dialogue professionals practicing globally. She is a community and organizational mediator and delivered Certificate mediation training and numerous conflict\, negotiation\, and mediation courses. \nAs a Board Member and facilitator in peace and dialogue organizations\, she led interfaith and intergroup dialogues in the Middle East and taught politicians and government officials in Africa. As the Head of Strategy at the Conflict Resolution and Mediation Center in the Israeli Ministry of Justice\, she introduced Alternative Dispute Resolution and mediation in the country. Her involvement in the educational democratic movement in Israel\, where she conceptualized and led democratic and dialogic educational reforms\, powerfully shaped her systemic-relational approach to transforming conflict and operationalizing inclusivity.

SUMMARY:Building Peace from the Inside Out
DESCRIPTION:Join MBBI as we engage Libby Hoffman (President of Catalyst for Peace and multi-award-winning author of The Answers Are There: Building Peace from the Inside Out) and DG Mawn (President of National Association for Community Mediation (NAFCM) and the 2023 Melanie Greenberg US Peacebuilding Excellence Award Recipient) in a conversation about Building Peace from the Inside Out.\n \nAs the momentum grows for people-centered efforts to build social cohesion and security for all in this multi-racial\, pluralistic republic\, we bring together two great practitioners\, leaders with heart and vision\,  who will share their experiences & wisdom and inspire collaborative action. Libby Hoffman will discuss how the unique approach of Fambul Tok (“family talk”) in Sierra Leone—anchoring reconciliation in indigenous traditions of communal truth-telling\, apology\, and forgiveness—restored that culture and unleashed a powerful resource for national healing. DG Mawn represents the transformative work of over 300 centers across North America and will share his perspectives on the work of the Community Mediation Centers (CMCs) in the USA. He also helped to co-create the Contemporary Dispute Resolution Graduate Certificate at George Mason University.\n \nIn The Answers Are There\, Libby Hoffman shows us what is possible when outside aid animates\, rather than obstructs\, local leadership and recognizes and honors community wisdom\, priorities\, and resources. Through his years in leadership at NAFCM\, DG Mawn has supported the work of those who are deeply embedded in the community and form a key component of the human infrastructure for social cohesion and security in the USA. DG also co-convenes the TRUST Network which is  at the heart of this enormous task of building connections across networks and sectors. \n \nAt this moment\, the US landscape is filled with an enormous amount of activity that includes emerging organizations\, networks within and across sectors\, and large convenings such as the 22nd Century Initiative in MN\, The American Democracy Summit in CA\, NAFCM’S Assembly in VA\, Moms for Liberty Summit in PA\, and the Braver Angels gathering in PA. These are all ‘massively parallel processes’ energizing civic engagement and in order to build social cohesion while mitigating the risk for political violence and hate crimes.\n \nJoin our efforts to identify and share effective practices and lessons from across the world and the growing recognition of the need for innovation.\n \nThis will be a 1.5-hour discussion hosted by MBBI CEO Prabha Sankaranarayan. Contributions to support US peacebuilding can be made through donations for the TRUST Network.\nRegister here!

SUMMARY:Deepening Without Drowning – An Introduction to Insight Mediation
DESCRIPTION:Engage in this exciting webinar\, Deepening Without Drowning – An Introduction to Insight Mediations. This 90-minute event will be on January 14th\, 2025\, at 2:00 pm ET  (USA. UTC -5). Please use the Time Zone Converter to determine when this engaging conversation will be in your time zone. This PeaceConnect session is $10 for non-MBBI members\, $5 for MBBI Members. \nDescription of the webinar: \nInsight Mediation has been described as the “fourth pillar” of conflict resolution. It starts with a definition of conflict that makes sense for the relational work mediators do\, with a focus on the challenging human behaviours we see every day in our work. Grounded in learning theory\, Insight Mediators approach conflict through a learning lens\, rather than one of containment or avoidance. In this workshop\, Jacinta Gallant will introduce you to the Insight Approach to Conflict and Mediation. As we gain an understanding of the “how” and “why” of conflict behaviours\, we will learn some Insight skills to more effectively interact/intervene.  The goal of this workshop is to help you start asking more\, and telling less\, and feel the relief that comes from an approach that is grounded in understanding human behaviour. \nRegister here!\n \nJacinta Gallant is a collaborative lawyer\, mediator and conflict educator living in Prince Edward Island\, and working globally. She is recognized internationally for her insightful and experiential approach to teaching and managing conflict\, and has been welcomed as a trainer throughout the Americas\, Europe\, Australia\, New Zealand and Southeast Asia.  Jacinta’s innovative resources\, Our Family in Two Homes\, and Designing Our Future Together help clients prepare to engage deeply\, and productively\, with Family Lawyers\, Mediators and Collaborative Practitioners.  \nJacinta’s podcast\, The Authentic Professional\, focuses on how professionals can bring more of who they are to what they do\, and her latest book\, Going Steady\, helps engage couples in conversations that sustain and nourish their relationship. Jacinta’s ultimate goal is to help conflict professionals engage with clients in a more meaningful way\, manage conflict more effectively\, and get more enjoyment out of this important work.

The intervention is an experiential workshop con “Proactive Restorative Practices for the Prevention of Violence and Discrimination” that seeks to raise awareness among all members of the community – students\, teachers and administrative staff – regarding what types of behaviors constitute violence and negatively impact coexistence\, based on the exchange of experiences in a safe space for dialogue. The workshop also provides an introduction to proactive restorative practice as an approach to prevention and early response to harmful behaviors. The project incorporates practices and principles of education for peace and restorative justice\, as well as gender\, human rights and masculinity perspectives\, with aim of impacting three root causes of violence and discrimination: (a) environments that reward or tolerate violence\, (b) beliefs and attitudes of superiority linked to structural inequalities\, and (c) lack of collaborative capabilities. I will provide a brief overview of the theoretical framework and pedagogical approach of the workshop offered in different departments of UNAM in the context of the project\, as well as preliminary findings that have emerged\, both qualitatively and quantitatively.\n \nBio: Mara I.
