DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to invite you and your colleagues to celebrate the launch of MBB-Europe\, the European collaboration region of Mediators Beyond Borders International in The Hague\, City of Peace and Justice in the Netherlands. \nPlease join us in person or virtually on Wednesday\, 11 June 2025 between 3 PM and 6 PM CET for a celebration to officially launch the establishment of our foundation in Europe. \nWe aim to connect community mediation organisations across the region to promote knowledge sharing and best practices\, and to amplify the essential work being done by community mediators to promote social and community cohesion across European towns and cities. We will be joined by representatives of the Municipality of The Hague\, founders of Mediators Beyond Borders\, international mediators\, peacebuilders and many others concerned about peace and justice in Europe and beyond. We will provide food and drink and time for networking.

Through decades of frontline work—from peace negotiations and ceasefire mediation to grassroots organizing and political advocacy—Visaka Dharmadasa and Dr. Bilqis Abu-Osba have challenged exclusion\, elevated women’s leadership\, and forged new paths for civic participation in the midst of conflict and transition. \nTogether\, they will reflect on the power of civic leadership in times of crisis\, the critical importance of inclusive national dialogue\, and how women’s voices and experiences shape more just and sustainable futures. Drawing on their lived experiences and strategic engagement with governments\, communities\, and international actors\, they will explore how inclusive processes can heal divided societies\, reclaim public space\, and ensure that transitions center human rights and dignity. Their insights offer not only powerful inspiration but also concrete lessons for Syrians seeking to navigate complex political realities and build a future grounded in justice\, accountability\, and democratic values. \nانضموا إلينا في جلسة جديدة من سلسلة أصوات من أجل التغيير، حيث نلتقي شخصيتين نسائيتين بارزتين كان لهما دور محوري في دفع جهود السلام والعدالة وتوسيع المشاركة السياسية في بلديهما: سريلانكا واليمن. على مدار عقود من العمل الميداني، من التفاوض على اتفاقات السلام والوساطة في وقف إطلاق النار إلى تنظيم الحملات الشعبية والعمل السياسي، قادت فيساكا دارماداسا و الدكتورة بلقيس أبو أصبع مسارات جديدة لمشاركة النساء ورفض الإقصاء، وأسهمتا في تمكين المجتمعات في ظل الصراعات والتحولات. \nستناقش الضيفتان أهمية القيادة المجتمعية في أوقات الأزمات، ودور الحوار الوطني الشامل في تجاوز الانقسامات، وكيف يمكن لصوت المرأة وتجربتها أن يساهما في بناء مستقبل أكثر عدلاً واستدامة. وبالاستناد إلى تجاربهما الشخصية وعلاقاتهما الممتدة مع الحكومات والمجتمع المدني والجهات الدولية، ستستعرضان كيف يمكن للعمليات الشاملة أن تداوي المجتمعات المنقسمة، وتستعيد الحيز العام، وتضمن أن تكون مسارات التحول مرتكزة إلى كرامة الإنسان وحقوقه. \nمداخلاتهما لا تقتصر على مشاركة التجارب، بل تقدم رؤى ودروسًا عملية مهمة للسوريين الساعين لفهم الواقع السياسي المعقّد وبناء مستقبل يقوم على العدالة والمساءلة والقيم الديمقراطية. \nSpeakers: \nVisaka Dharmadasa is the founder and Chair of the Association of War Affected Women and Parents of Servicemen Missing in Action. A key peacebuilder during Sri Lanka’s civil war\, she helped broker the ceasefire between the government and the LTTE and united women across conflict lines. She educates soldiers and leaders on international humanitarian law and promotes UN Resolution 1325 on women\, peace\, and security. Visaka trains women for political leadership and power sharing\, and in 2023 facilitated a historic dialogue between Buddhist monks and the Tamil diaspora\, resulting in the six-point Himalaya Declaration. Her work has earned multiple honors\, including the 2006 Humanitarian Award from InterAction (Washington D.C.)\, the 2022 Human Rights Salutation\, and the 2024 USIP Women Building Peace Award. A nominee for the 2005 collective Nobel Peace Prize\, she has advised the Sri Lankan government and international bodies on reconciliation and human rights. She is affiliated with numerous peace networks\, including WASL\, GPPAC\, and the Global Network of Women Peacebuilders\, and holds a Harvard degree in negotiations\, mediation\, and women’s security. \nفيساكا دارماداسا هي مؤسسة ورئيسة جمعية النساء المتأثرات بالحرب وأهالي الجنود المفقودين أثناء الخدمة. تُعد من أبرز الشخصيات النسائية التي ساهمت في بناء السلام خلال الحرب الأهلية في سريلانكا، حيث لعبت دورًا محوريًا في التوسط لوقف إطلاق النار بين الحكومة وجبهة نمور التاميل، وتمكنت من جمع النساء من مختلف الأطراف المتنازعة للعمل سويًا من أجل السلام. تعمل فيساكا على توعية الجنود والقادة المجتمعيين بالقوانين الدولية الإنسانية، وتروج لقرار مجلس الأمن ١٣٢٥ بشأن المرأة والسلام والأمن. كما تُدرّب النساء على القيادة السياسية والمشاركة في صنع القرار. في عام ٢٠٢٣ نظّمت حوارًا تاريخيًا بين رهبان بوذيين وممثلين عن الشتات التاميلي، نتج عنه “إعلان الهملايا” المكوّن من ست نقاط، والذي حظي بدعم من أعلى السلطات في البلاد. نالت تقديرًا واسعًا لجهودها، من بينها جائزة العمل الإنساني لعام ٢٠٠٦ من منظمة InterAction بواشنطن، وجائزة تكريم حقوق الإنسان لعام ٢٠٢٢ وجائزة بناء السلام من معهد الولايات المتحدة للسلام لعام ٢٠٢٤. رُشحت مع مجموعة نساء لنيل جائزة نوبل للسلام عام ٢٠٠٥، وشاركت في تقديم المشورة لحكومة سريلانكا وجهات دولية حول المصالحة وحقوق الإنسان. تنتمي لعدة شبكات دولية للسلام، وتحمل شهادة من جامعة هارفارد في التفاوض والوساطة وأمن النساء.\nDr. Bilqis Abu-Osba is a professor of political science and gender studies at Sana’a University\, with extensive experience in government\, civil society\, and humanitarian work. She served as Vice-President of Yemen’s Supreme National Authority for Combating Corruption and has represented Yemen and Yemeni women at numerous international forums. In 2005\, she founded the Awam Cultural Development Foundation to support women’s political participation. Dr. Abu-Osba has played a key role in establishing networks and alliances advocating for women and youth\, particularly during Yemen’s transitional period. During the National Dialogue Conference\, she led advocacy campaigns to amplify women’s voices. She has participated in three rounds of peace negotiations—in Kuwait\, Geneva\, and Sweden—and was among the women invited to the signing of the Riyadh Agreement. She currently serves on the Women’s Advisory Group to the UN Envoy to Yemen and is a member of the political committee from the Riyadh consultations. DESCRIPTION:Workshop Description:\n \nSex trafficking is not only a human rights violation — it is a symptom of deeper systemic issues tied to global conflict\, displacement\, and gender-based oppression. This HLPF 2025 side event brings together global thought leaders\, policy advocates\, trauma-informed practitioners\, and a survivor leader to explore the intersection of sex trafficking with peacebuilding\, conflict resolution\, and international policy reform.\n \nHosted by Mediators Beyond Borders International (MBBI) in collaboration with Harvard GlobalWE and Teach Train Transform (TTT)\, this workshop will highlight innovative neuroscience-based approaches to healing trauma\, uplifting survivor voices through storytelling\, and reshaping global narratives through justice-centered diplomacy.\n \nWe will examine how trauma-informed peacebuilding and survivor-informed policy can disrupt cycles of exploitation\, and how international collaboration is essential to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Since the early stages of the Syrian conflict\, she worked on documenting human rights violations and sexual violence in detention centers. Sema contributed to numerous reports and policy papers on documentation\, gender-sensitive accountability\, and legislation concerning missing persons\, including work with the Conflict and Civicness Research Group at LSE IDEAS. She is a co-founder of multiple initiatives\, such as the ‘We’ Network for WHRD in the MENA region and Urnammu for Justice and Human Rights. Sema continues to share her expertise with civic actors and support feminist initiatives in the diaspora\, and serves as an investigator with Dar Justice and as a research consultant at the LSE Middle East Centre. \nسما نصّار\nسما نصّار ناشطة حقوقية كرّست جهودها لقضايا المعتقلين والمختفين قسراً. منذ بدايات النزاع في سوريا، انخرطت في توثيق انتهاكات حقوق الإنسان والعنف الجنسي داخل مراكز الاحتجاز، وأسهمت في إعداد تقارير وأوراق سياسات حول التوثيق، والمساءلة الحساسة للنوع الاجتماعي، والتشريعات الخاصة بالمفقودين، من بينها عملها مع مجموعة النزاع والمدنية في “LSE IDEAS”. شاركت في تأسيس عدة مبادرات، منها شبكة “نحن” للمدافعات عن حقوق الإنسان في الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا، ومنظمة “أورنمّو” للعدالة وحقوق الإنسان. تواصل سما مشاركة خبرتها مع الفاعلين المدنيين ودعم المبادرات النسوية في المهجر، وتشغل حالياً منصب محققة في “دار العدالة” وباحثة استشارية في مركز الشرق الأوسط التابع لجامعة لندن للاقتصاد. \nPalwasha Hassan is Senior Technical and Program Director for Mina’s List\, overseeing global program implementation. With over 26 years of experience in gender\, development\, humanitarian aid\, and peacebuilding\, she has held leadership roles including Executive Director of the Afghan Women’s Educational Center and founding member of the Afghan Women’s Network. She helped establish the women’s quota in Afghanistan’s constitution and launched Roazana\, the country’s first women’s legal support organization. Hassan has also facilitated regional dialogues in Pakistan\, Iran\, and Central Asia to promote human rights\, peace\, and democracy. A Nobel Peace Prize nominee in 2005\, she was a finalist for the Sakharov Prize and received the Hillary Rodham Clinton Award for exceptional leadership. Moussa was elected Vice President of the Syrian National Coalition in May 2018\, serving two consecutive terms until July 2020\, and was re-elected in September 2023\, a position she held until the fall of the former Syrian regime in December 2024. She founded Dentelle in Turkey\, an events\, exhibitions\, and conferences company that supported women entrepreneurs and expanded market access for Syrian products. After returning to Syria\, she became Project Manager of the Ra’edat Women’s Economic Empowerment Project\, serves as a consultant on service exports and international exhibitions with the Local Production & Export Development Authority (EPSDA)\, and leads the Souq Jarat Al-Qala’a initiative supporting small businesses and people returning from displacement. An alumna of the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP)\, she also appeared in the documentary Do Seagulls Migrate?\, about displaced working women. She believes economic empowerment and entrepreneurship are essential pillars of recovery and building more sustainable and prosperous communities. \nLayma Murtaza is a humanitarian tech entrepreneur\, international development professional and humanitarian advocate whose career spans over 15 years at the intersection of crisis response\, state building\, economic justice\, women’s rights\, across Afghanistan\, Syria\, Yemen\, Türkiye\, Qatar and the broader MENA region. She has worked with the Aga Khan Foundation\, the International Rescue Committee\, the Danish Refugee Council\, and the International Organization for Migration\, and brings a deep commitment to the Women\, Peace and Security agenda. She has published and advocated on Afghan women’s right to work\, education\, and dignity\, and served on the U.S. WPS Committee with CCSD alongside Rajaa Altalli supporting Syrian women in 2019 and 2020.
