We will look at the 5 Rs of restorative justice and reflect on them in personal ways\, as well as in the context of our professional lives: Relationship\, Responsibility\, Respect\, Repair\, and Reintegration. Other aspects of Active Peace Circles will also be covered to fill out the picture and describe how the work fosters transformation at personal\, interpersonal\, and collective levels. He previously worked as a high school teacher and is working toward a PhD in Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Manitoba. Or there can be water-related conflicts\, like disputes over fishing in oceans and basins\, water related migration\, etc. etc. These can be on a local level or a more global level. In this webinar\, Linda Reijerkerk\, mediator and former water consultant\, will highlight some of the conflicts she has been mediating\, the specific features of such conflicts and the do’s and don’ts. As women’s rights are inseparable from human rights\, this month’s series will feature prominent Syrian human rights activists who will share their insights on the current state of human rights in Syria.  \nTo this day\, over a decade after the start of the revolution and just months following the fall of the Assad regime\, Syria is left to reckon with the widespread human rights violations\, displacement\, and economic hardships. She has contributed to shadow reports for the CEDAW Committee and helped draft constitutional principles with a gender perspective. She has held leadership roles in several human rights organizations\, including the Syrian Women’s Network and “Together for Women’s Issues.” With a background in media\, she has written articles on women’s issues and participated in training programs on constitution-building\, negotiation\, transitional justice\, and international humanitarian law. She is the founder and director of Rose Organization for Support and Empowerment and a founding member of Sara Organization for Combating Violence Against Women\, where she served as Executive Director and led the legal committee supporting survivors of abuse. Muna has played a key role in organizing and leading initiatives on gender-based violence\, child marriage\, women’s political participation\, and youth life skills. Priscilla Prutzman is co-founder and Executive Director of Creative Response to Conflict (CRC) located just north of New York City. She is a co-author of The Standards of Peer Mediation published by the Association of Conflict Resolution and has written many articles on Conflict Resolution Education. She will share her experiences from the eighties to the present time about school based peer mediation programs.\n \nBio: Priscilla Prutzman\, a pioneer in the field of conflict resolution\, is a renowned trainer and facilitator. She has worked with dozens of schools in the tri-state area and teaches Conflict Resolution in Education at SUNY New Paltz\, a graduate course in the Humanistic/Multicultural Education program. Priscilla has taught alternatives to violence and mediation in several prisons and re-entry programs. Priscilla regularly presents at national and international conferences. She is on the Fulbright Roster for Peace and Conflict Resolution\, and has written many articles and books on mediation\, conflict resolution\, bias awareness\, bullying prevention and intervention\, and restorative practices. She is co-author of the Peer Mediation Standards of the Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR) and has received recognition including the National Peace Foundation Peacemaker Award\, the Peace and Justice Studies Association Peacemaker of the Year Award\,  the 1st annual William Kreidler Award for service to the field of conflict resolution\, and the Diversity and Equity Award from ACR. She is currently working in several New York City Schools\, helping implement a whole-school approach to restorative practices.

This conversation will feature speakers from diverse national backgrounds who have been directly involved in and have studied transitions toward democracy\, inclusion\, and justice. \nOur guests will share their insights into the specific challenges their countries faced — ranging from rebuilding institutions and transitional justice to social reconciliation. She has served in several positions for Kosova\, including Deputy Prime Minister\, Minister of Foreign Affairs\, Minister of Dialogue\, and a five-term Member of Parliament. As Kosovo’s Chief Negotiator in the EU-facilitated dialogue with Serbia (2011-2017)\, she signed the first-ever agreement between Kosovo and Serbia. Dr. Tahiri was the only woman peace negotiator in the Balkans during key international peace processes\, including the Rambouillet Conference (1999). She chairs the Regional Women’s Lobby in Southeast Europe (RWLSEE) and is an active member of Women Waging Peace. With senior roles in academia\, government\, and civil society across South Africa and beyond\, she is a seasoned researcher\, facilitator\, and poet. She has over 200 publications and presentations\, many translated into 17 languages. A Fulbright-Amy Biehl Fellow at Stanford\, she holds advanced degrees in Political Studies from the Universities of Cape Town and Stellenbosch. This PeaceConnect session is $10 for non-MBBI members\, $5 for MBBI Members. \nRegister here!\nAbstract: In this presentation I will share progress in an action-research project that seeks to implement and evaluate an intervention model for the effective prevention of violence and discrimination\, replicable in any high school or higher education institution. The intervention is an experiential workshop con “Proactive Restorative Practices for the Prevention of Violence and Discrimination” that seeks to raise awareness among all members of the community – students\, teachers and administrative staff – regarding what types of behaviors constitute violence and negatively impact coexistence\, based on the exchange of experiences in a safe space for dialogue. The workshop also provides an introduction to proactive restorative practice as an approach to prevention and early response to harmful behaviors. The project incorporates practices and principles of education for peace and restorative justice\, as well as gender\, human rights and masculinity perspectives\, with aim of impacting three root causes of violence and discrimination: (a) environments that reward or tolerate violence\, (b) beliefs and attitudes of superiority linked to structural inequalities\, and (c) lack of collaborative capabilities. I will provide a brief overview of the theoretical framework and pedagogical approach of the workshop offered in different departments of UNAM in the context of the project\, as well as preliminary findings that have emerged\, both qualitatively and quantitatively.\n  \nBio: Mara I. Hernández has more than 20 years of experience as practitioner and academic in the fields of conflict resolution\, mediation\, consensus facilitation\, violence prevention and restorative justice. She holds a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)\, where she specialized in negotiation and democratic theory\, and a Master in Public Administration from Harvard University. She is also a certified mediator from the Harvard Law School. \n \nMara is founder and Executive Director at Diálogo\, Innovación y Cambio (Dialogica)\, an innovation lab and consulting firm in her field of expertise\, and founding member of the Consensus Building Institute Global Network\, established to share expertise in the field among practitioners world wide. She also teaches at UNAM where she has led the implementation of alternative dispute resolution for the Ombuds Office and currently leads an action-research project in violence and discrimination prevention in highschool and higher educación. As an international mediator and consensus facilitator\, she has worked in Brazil\, Nicaragua\, Chile and Ecuador. She has consulted for the UN\, the Inter-American Development Bank\, the National Endowment for Democracy\, the International Center for Transitional Justice\, the Mexican Senate\, the World Bank\, USAID and the Canadian Government\, among others. She has published several books such as “Negociación Política en Democracia” [Political Negotiations in Democracy] and “Resolución de Conflictos\, Justicia Restaurativa y Atención a la Violencia de Género en Ámbitos Universitarios” [Conflict Resolution\, Restorative Justice and Gendered Violence in University Settings].

A key peacebuilder during Sri Lanka’s civil war\, she helped broker the ceasefire between the government and the LTTE and united women across conflict lines. She educates soldiers and leaders on international humanitarian law and promotes UN Resolution 1325 on women\, peace\, and security. Visaka trains women for political leadership and power sharing\, and in 2023 facilitated a historic dialogue between Buddhist monks and the Tamil diaspora\, resulting in the six-point Himalaya Declaration. Her work has earned multiple honors\, including the 2006 Humanitarian Award from InterAction (Washington D.C.)\, the 2022 Human Rights Salutation\, and the 2024 USIP Women Building Peace Award. A nominee for the 2005 collective Nobel Peace Prize\, she has advised the Sri Lankan government and international bodies on reconciliation and human rights. She served as Vice-President of Yemen’s Supreme National Authority for Combating Corruption and has represented Yemen and Yemeni women at numerous international forums. In 2005\, she founded the Awam Cultural Development Foundation to support women’s political participation. Dr. Abu-Osba has played a key role in establishing networks and alliances advocating for women and youth\, particularly during Yemen’s transitional period. During the National Dialogue Conference\, she led advocacy campaigns to amplify women’s voices. She has participated in three rounds of peace negotiations—in Kuwait\, Geneva\, and Sweden—and was among the women invited to the signing of the Riyadh Agreement. She currently serves on the Women’s Advisory Group to the UN Envoy to Yemen and is a member of the political committee from the Riyadh consultations. Since the early stages of the Syrian conflict\, she worked on documenting human rights violations and sexual violence in detention centers. Sema contributed to numerous reports and policy papers on documentation\, gender-sensitive accountability\, and legislation concerning missing persons\, including work with the Conflict and Civicness Research Group at LSE IDEAS. She is a co-founder of multiple initiatives\, such as the ‘We’ Network for WHRD in the MENA region and Urnammu for Justice and Human Rights. Sema continues to share her expertise with civic actors and support feminist initiatives in the diaspora\, and serves as an investigator with Dar Justice and as a research consultant at the LSE Middle East Centre. \nسما نصّار\nسما نصّار ناشطة حقوقية كرّست جهودها لقضايا المعتقلين والمختفين قسراً. منذ بدايات النزاع في سوريا، انخرطت في توثيق انتهاكات حقوق الإنسان والعنف الجنسي داخل مراكز الاحتجاز، وأسهمت في إعداد تقارير وأوراق سياسات حول التوثيق، والمساءلة الحساسة للنوع الاجتماعي، والتشريعات الخاصة بالمفقودين، من بينها عملها مع مجموعة النزاع والمدنية في “LSE IDEAS”. شاركت في تأسيس عدة مبادرات، منها شبكة “نحن” للمدافعات عن حقوق الإنسان في الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا، ومنظمة “أورنمّو” للعدالة وحقوق الإنسان. تواصل سما مشاركة خبرتها مع الفاعلين المدنيين ودعم المبادرات النسوية في المهجر، وتشغل حالياً منصب محققة في “دار العدالة” وباحثة استشارية في مركز الشرق الأوسط التابع لجامعة لندن للاقتصاد. \nPalwasha Hassan is Senior Technical and Program Director for Mina’s List\, overseeing global program implementation. With over 26 years of experience in gender\, development\, humanitarian aid\, and peacebuilding\, she has held leadership roles including Executive Director of the Afghan Women’s Educational Center and founding member of the Afghan Women’s Network. She helped establish the women’s quota in Afghanistan’s constitution and launched Roazana\, the country’s first women’s legal support organization. Hassan has also facilitated regional dialogues in Pakistan\, Iran\, and Central Asia to promote human rights\, peace\, and democracy. A Nobel Peace Prize nominee in 2005\, she was a finalist for the Sakharov Prize and received the Hillary Rodham Clinton Award for exceptional leadership. She holds a master’s in Post-war Recovery Studies from York University\, UK. \nبلواشا حسن \nبلواشا حسن تشغل منصب المديرة التقنية وبرامج التنفيذ في منظمة Mina’s List، حيث تشرف على إدارة البرامج على المستوى العالمي. تمتلك خبرة تمتد لأكثر من ٢٦ عاماً في مجالات الجندر والتنمية والإغاثة الإنسانية وبناء السلام، وتولت خلالها مناصب قيادية بارزة، من بينها المديرة التنفيذية للمركز التعليمي للنساء الأفغانيات، وكانت من المؤسسين للشبكة الأفغانية للنساء. ساهمت في ترسيخ الكوتا النسائية ضمن الدستور الأفغاني، وأسست منظمة روزانا كأول هيئة قانونية لدعم النساء في البلاد. كما عملت على تيسير حوارات إقليمية في باكستان وإيران وآسيا الوسطى لتعزيز حقوق الإنسان والسلام والديمقراطية. رُشحت عام ٢٠٠٥ لجائزة نوبل للسلام، ووصلت للتصفيات النهائية لجائزة سخاروف، كما نالت جائزة هيلاري كلينتون للقيادة المتميزة. تحمل درجة الماجستير في دراسات التعافي بعد النزاعات من جامعة يورك في المملكة المتحدة. \n
