SUMMARY:Webinar Series - Critical Thinking (May 14 - July 30)
DESCRIPTION:This is the first webinar series focused on Critical Thinking that is co-sponsored by Mediators Beyond Borders International (MBBI) and the Millennium Alliance of Humanity and the Biosphere (Stanford University). It is led by Ashok Panikkar of MetaCulture. Critical Thinking: This course demystifies the development of one’s thinking process. What prevents us from being open and curious learners? How can we think objectively and make useful decisions and choices? What are the obstacles to being a critical thinker? How can we cultivate our intellectual\, imaginative and relational capabilities?  \nIt is a 12-part Conflict\, Culture & Democracy Course. It will be held weekly on Fridays at 10 AM ET (-4 UTC). Each session will be 90 minutes long. The first session is scheduled for Friday\, May 14\, 2021\, at 10 AM EST and the twelfth session is scheduled for Friday\, July 30\, 2021\, at 10 AM EST.  \nIf the last few years have taught us anything\, it is that intelligence\, wisdom and humaneness cannot be taken for granted anymore. Established in 2005\, MetaCulture’s founder\, Ashok Panikkar\, has a background in teaching people how to think\, communicate and manage conflicts.      \nDEMOSAPIENS\, MetaCulture’s educational division\, is committed to developing thoughtful citizens who can sustain free and open societies. Our programs are designed to cultivate:  \n\n CRITICAL THINKING – Thinking objectively\, without personal or social biases.\n PERSONAL & CIVIC DISPOSITIONS – Engaging generously with other people in our community.\n REAL KNOWLEDGE– Understanding REALITY- beyond personal perceptions and ‘lived’ experience. \n\nA lifetime of working with groups and communities to strengthen their collaboration\, communication and conflict management processes has taught us that the health of a community is dependent upon the character\, competence and dispositions of the people involved. This has serious implications for democracy itself. SUMMARY:Decolonizing Aid and Peacebuilding: Lessons for US Peacebuilding
DESCRIPTION:In November 2020\, Adeso\, the Alliance for Peacebuilding\, Peace Direct\, and Women of Color Advancing Peace and Security (WCAPS) hosted a three-day online consultation on racism\, discrimination\, and other forms of bias in international development\, humanitarian aid\, and peacebuilding. We combined the findings from that initial consultation\, as well as the findings from some complementary region-specific Zoom calls\, to produce a report titled ‘Time to Decolonise the Aid System.’  With an emphasis on the perspectives of local practitioners\, this report examines the manifestations of structural racism\, the implications of language\, and presents recommendations for donors\, INGOs\, and individual practitioners in the Global North on how to ensure their efforts are equitable\, sustainable\, and locally-led. DESCRIPTION:MBBI is honored to partner with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Indonesia for the Regional Forum of Women Peace Negotiators and Mediators on June 15-24th 2021. Shadia Marhaban\, Representative of the Southeast Asian Network of Women Peace Negotiators (SEANWPNM) and MBBI’s Regional Consultant for Southeast Asia\, along with other members of this eminently skilled Network\, will be facilitating discussions about a range of topics including mediation & negotiation\, perspectives of governments & non-state actors\, leadership & gender considerations. This forum will include case studies from Afghanistan\, Palestine\, and Timor Leste as well. The Regional Forum is comprised of several activities which seek to allow women to build confidence in mediation by learning from one another in non-formal\, non-structured ways\, and to change the dynamics of conflict mediation which has been mainly dominated by patriarchal frameworks and practices. The forum will consolidate and promote the sharing of experiences\, knowledge\, and know-how among women\, particularly women in Southeast Asia. Is it possible to be both neutral and omnipartial? Should we be neutral or omnipartial? Is it even possible to be an effective mediator adopting a neutral stance\, do we do more harm than good? She holds a Ph.D. in Mediation and Conflict Resolution. \nCharalee held academic positions in England\, New Zealand\, and Canada and now online with EUCLID. She has published three books of literary fiction. She has provided successful Mediation services for Child Care Services\, TUSLA clients\, and for families\, parents and neighbours in conflict. \nHolding the Advanced Certificate in Group Analysis (School of Psychotherapy\, St Vincent’s Hospital Dublin/ Irish Group Analytic Society)\, Elizabeth combines her skills and experience\, volunteering occasionally as a facilitator with Glencree Centre for Peace and Reconciliation\, in dialogue and other events involving mixed groups from Northern Ireland and the Republic. \nElizabeth is also a medical doctor\, with many years of experience in Child Protection/Safeguarding at a senior level and chaired a number of formal Historical Child Abuse/Adult Safeguarding Investigations and Inquiries. \nDouglas Spoors\nDouglas Spoors currently serves as the EEO Education/ADR Manager for the Department of the Navy\, Navy Exchange Service Command in Virginia Beach\, Virginia\, United States\, designing and providing EEO training to over 10\,000 associates world-wide as well as providing mediation services in workplace disputes and EEO complaints. \nHe is an attorney\, mediator\, trainer\, and the founder of the Institute for Mixed Method Mediation. He is the author of the book Mixed Method Mediation: A Hybrid Approach to Conflict Resolution\, now in its 2nd Edition. He has mediated conflicts involving employment discrimination\, wrongful termination\, family law\, consumer debt\, landlord/tenant\, real estate\, and workplace disputes. \nHe serves on the Outreach Sub-Committee for the Mediators Beyond Borders International\, Climate Change Project (CCP)\, and on the Creative Arts Sub- Committee for the CCP. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Southern California Mediation Association and a member of the Virginia Mediation Network. In March\, 2019\, he received the Ambassador for Peace in Conflict Resolution Award for his contribution in the field of mediation. \nHe received his J.D. and L.LM. in Transnational Business Practices from the McGeorge School of Law\, the latter in conjunction with the University of Salzburg\, Austria. He received his facilitative mediation training from the Loyola Law School/Los Angeles\, a Certificate in Transformative Mediation from Dan Simon Mediation\, a Certificate in Negotiation Mastery from Harvard Business School\, and a Certificate in Neuro Design Engineering from the Academy of Wealth and Achievement. \nFavorite Quote: It’s not about who is right or wrong\, it’s about problem solving and finding meaningful solutions. \nIram Majid\n \nIram Majid is a legal professional with experience of 16+ years in handling wide range of criminal\, matrimonial\, civil\, commercial\, banking and finance matters cases inside the court as Advocate and outside the court as Mediator. \nIram had completed her LLM from KUK  University.
