SUMMARY:Webinar Series - Islam and Pluralism (March 13 - May 29)
DESCRIPTION:This is the first webinar series focused on Islam and Pluralism that is co-sponsored by Mediators Beyond Borders International (MBBI) and the Millennium Alliance of Humanity and the Biosphere (Stanford University). It is led by Ashok Panikkar of MetaCulture. Islam and Pluralism: This course comes out of MetaCulture’s insights working with Muslim community leaders since 2007. What are Liberalism\, Pluralism\, and Secularism? Do all religious groups respond similarly to them? Is the Muslim world at odds with liberal democracies or just with Western imperialism? How can Muslims survive and thrive in non-Muslim societies? \nIt is a 12-part Conflict\, Culture & Democracy Course. It will be held weekly on Saturdays at 10 AM ET (-4 UTC). Each session will be 90 minutes long. The first session is scheduled for Saturday\, March 13\, 2021\, at 10 AM EST and the twelfth session is scheduled for Saturday\, May 29\, 2021\, at 10 AM EST. \nIf the last few years have taught us anything\, it is that intelligence\, wisdom and humaneness cannot be taken for granted anymore. Established in 2005\, MetaCulture’s founder\, Ashok Panikkar\, has a background in teaching people how to think\, communicate and manage conflicts.      \nDEMOSAPIENS\, MetaCulture’s educational division\, is committed to developing thoughtful citizens who can sustain free and open societies. Our programs are designed to cultivate:  \n\n CRITICAL THINKING – Thinking objectively\, without personal or social biases.\n PERSONAL & CIVIC DISPOSITIONS – Engaging generously with other people in our community.\n REAL KNOWLEDGE– Understanding REALITY- beyond personal perceptions and ‘lived’ experience. \n\nA lifetime of working with groups and communities to strengthen their collaboration\, communication and conflict management processes has taught us that the health of a community is dependent upon the character\, competence and dispositions of the people involved. This has serious implications for democracy itself. Recent events have demonstrated that\, in addition to free elections\, rule of law and institutions\, a liberal democracy needs wise citizens\, not just subjects\, spectators\, bystanders or consumers.  \nEach session will seek to develop a discourse around democracy\, politics\, and culture that can be well-informed\, thoughtful\, and mature- rather than reactive\, angry\, wistful\, or riddled with assumptions. \nPlease note that the pricing for the Demo Sapiens Webinar Series is different than MBBI’s monthly webinars. Participants are paying for a 12-part series co-sponsored by MBBI\, Meta-Culture\, and the Millennium Alliance of Humanity and the Biosphere. \nRegister here for the Webinar Series starting on Saturday\, March 13\, 2021\, at 10 AM ET

SUMMARY:Taking a Locally-Led Approach to Building Peace: A Conversation with Peace Direct
DESCRIPTION:Peace Direct — and the TRUST Network — believe that peacebuilding must be led locally and by the communities that are most impacted by violence and oppression.  Yet\, the international system continues to marginalize local people and perpetuate systems of exclusion\, colonialism\, racism\, classism and militarism.  And our own peacebuilding community has work to do to become more connected to local communities here in the US.  How do we show up more for those in our own country on the frontlines of change? How can we help transform the international system and support local people to lead the change they want?  Join us in a conversation to dig deep and plan new steps together toward a healed world.\nWith Bridget Moix\, U.S. Executive Director of Peace Direct\, and Shannon Paige\, Scoville Peace Fellow\nRegister to attend: \nhttps://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJMrce6rqj0sGNPQxlzV_k21g9VpUpY9Pp9l \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Webinar Series - Conflict Culture & Democracy (March 11 - May 27)
DESCRIPTION:This is the sixth DemoSapiens webinar series that is co-sponsored by Mediators Beyond Borders International (MBBI) and the Millennium Alliance of Humanity and the Biosphere (Stanford University). It is led by Ashok Panikkar of MetaCulture. \nIt is a 12-part Conflict\, Culture & Democracy Course. It will be held weekly on Thursdays at 10 AM ET (-4 UTC). Each session will be 90 minutes long. The first session is scheduled for Thursday\, March 11\, 2021\, at 10 AM EST and the twelfth session is scheduled for Thursday\, May 27\, 2021\, at 10 AM EST.  \nThis course is designed to help participants place the current global crisis of democracy within the larger (and complex) context. Navigating this unprecedented political\, ecological\, economic\, and cultural crisis will depend upon our capacity to understand: (a) How we got here. (b) The interlocking forces that are in play today (c) What history can teach us about human successes and limitations in addressing complex problems. SUMMARY:A New Zealand Perspective on Using Restorative Practices for Environmental Disputes
DESCRIPTION:Learn from two New Zealander environmental experts discuss the usage of restorative practices to resolve disputes. This 90-minute panel event will be on Wednesday\, March 10th\, 2021 at 2 pm EST (-5UTC) / 8 am New Zealand Time (On March 11th) (UTC +13). Please use the Time Zone Converter to determine when this engaging conversation will be in your time zone. \nFor more information on the Climate Change Policy Project\, please see here. \nIf you are interested in engaging with this team\, join as a member here \nRegister here! \nWith the increasing level of formal and informal reactions to minimize the negative impact of a human population on the land\, humanity is tasked with innovation in the face of the imminent collapse of modern society. Social movements provoke awareness of poor land management. Governments and corporations are charged with formal leadership to stop pollution\, monitor the environment\, and demand public accountability when toxins are leaked\, emitted\, and spilled. \nIn Aotearoa New Zealand\, the Resource Management Act empowers legal processes to prosecute people and entities when they damage the environment. Charges are laid\, penalties are imposed\, and punishments meted out. But what of the harm to the broader community? How can this formal system of crime and punishment reconcile the broader impact of environmental damage on fragile ecosystems and the community? How important is it for those who have done harm to acknowledge the negative impact their activity has on the environment? How can society be assured we learn from past damage to the ecology? \nRestorative justice has been an essential tool toward more effective outcomes in the aftermath of harm to the environment caused by human activity. Wayne Marriott and Penny Prescott will present a vision of restoring community relationships while recovering from the detrimental effects of human activity on the planet\, that embodies proven restorative practices \nAt the heart of these practices are a set of Maori (the indigenous people of Aotearoa New Zealand)  values. Penny and Wayne will speak to these values and provide insight into how restorative justice is not just about the rule of law\, but how it can positively influence the environment. \nPanelists:\nPenny Prescott:\n \nKo Taupiri te maunga\, ko Waikato me Waipa ngā awa\, ko Tainui te iwi.\nMy mountain is Taupiri\, my rivers are the Waikato and the Waipa\, my tribe is Tainui. \nPenny has worked as a Restorative Justice Facilitator for over ten years and specializes in working with young people and with Māori participants.  She works primarily in criminal cases before the court and community panels where participants can avoid formal charges\, but also works in workplace and environmental restorative proceedings.  Penny works also in non-profit management and has a background in youth development and Māori development.  She is passionate about social justice and equitable opportunities and participation in communities.  Penny lives in New Brighton\, Aotearoa\, with her whānau.     \nWayne Marriott:\n\n\nWayne has an MA in Conflict Transformation from the Eastern Mennonite University\, Virginia.  He is a dispute resolution practitioner based in Christchurch\, New Zealand. Wayne established Fleetwood Group Limited in 2002 to design restorative justice\, conflict management and dispute resolution processes for individuals and organisations. Wayne is active with disputes and negotiations in a range of jurisdictions\, such as family dispute resolution\, building industry claims and disputes; personal accident insurance claims; real estate complaints; family disputes/separation\, employment relations and earthquake insurance disputes. He also facilitates restorative justice cases referred from the criminal justice system. In 2019 Wayne was awarded the Micheal Klug Award by the Resolution Institute for community mediation. In 2020 he was a finalist for the New Zealand Law Awards\, the mediator of the year. He is married to Natalie. Together\, they have four children (Thomas\, Hamish\, William and Brenna) plus their dogs\, Bella and Ruby. You can find out more about Wayne at www.waynemarriott.co.nz.
