As a member of the youth cohort at the Center for Civil Society and Democracy (CCSD)\, she has actively participated in youth forums and peacebuilding workshops. Her work extends to several respected organizations\, including where she has led advocacy\, project management\, and conflict resolution training. Priscilla Prutzman is co-founder and Executive Director of Creative Response to Conflict (CRC) located just north of New York City. She is a co-author of The Standards of Peer Mediation published by the Association of Conflict Resolution and has written many articles on Conflict Resolution Education. She will share her experiences from the eighties to the present time about school based peer mediation programs.\n \nBio: Priscilla Prutzman\, a pioneer in the field of conflict resolution\, is a renowned trainer and facilitator. She has worked with dozens of schools in the tri-state area and teaches Conflict Resolution in Education at SUNY New Paltz\, a graduate course in the Humanistic/Multicultural Education program. Priscilla has taught alternatives to violence and mediation in several prisons and re-entry programs. Priscilla regularly presents at national and international conferences. She is on the Fulbright Roster for Peace and Conflict Resolution\, and has written many articles and books on mediation\, conflict resolution\, bias awareness\, bullying prevention and intervention\, and restorative practices. She is co-author of the Peer Mediation Standards of the Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR) and has received recognition including the National Peace Foundation Peacemaker Award\, the Peace and Justice Studies Association Peacemaker of the Year Award\,  the 1st annual William Kreidler Award for service to the field of conflict resolution\, and the Diversity and Equity Award from ACR. She is currently working in several New York City Schools\, helping implement a whole-school approach to restorative practices.

SUMMARY:Voices for Change: Global Reflections on Resilience and Political Transitions (May)
DESCRIPTION:Register here! اضغط هنا للتسجيل\n \nIn the May session of our Voices for Change series\, we will focus on the valuable lessons learned from the experiences of countries that have navigated political transitions. This conversation will feature speakers from diverse national backgrounds who have been directly involved in and have studied transitions toward democracy\, inclusion\, and justice. \nOur guests will share their insights into the specific challenges their countries faced — ranging from rebuilding institutions and transitional justice to social reconciliation. They will address how they overcame/are overcoming those complexities to lay the foundations for more democratic and inclusive societies.  \nThe discussion will explore what Syrians can learn from these global experiences and how such lessons might be adapted and applied in the Syrian context as it seeks a path forward. \nThis session will not only inform but will inspire. She has served in several positions for Kosova\, including Deputy Prime Minister\, Minister of Foreign Affairs\, Minister of Dialogue\, and a five-term Member of Parliament. As Kosovo’s Chief Negotiator in the EU-facilitated dialogue with Serbia (2011-2017)\, she signed the first-ever agreement between Kosovo and Serbia. Dr. Tahiri was the only woman peace negotiator in the Balkans during key international peace processes\, including the Rambouillet Conference (1999). She chairs the Regional Women’s Lobby in Southeast Europe (RWLSEE) and is an active member of Women Waging Peace. She is a Fulbright Scholar and speaks Albanian\, English\, Croatian\, Serbian\, and Turkish. \nالدكتورة إديتا تاهيري\nالدكتورة إديتا تاهيري هي من أبرز قيادات حركة استقلال كوسوفو، وتتمتع بخبرة تزيد عن ٣٠ عاماً في مجالات السياسة الخارجية، مفاوضات السلام، والتحولات ما بعد النزاعات. شغلت مناصب رفيعة منها نائبة رئيس الوزراء، وزيرة الخارجية، وزيرة الحوار، وعضوة في البرلمان لخمسة دورات. قادت فريق التفاوض الكوسوفي في الحوار الذي يسّره الاتحاد الأوروبي مع صربيا (٢٠١١-٢٠١٧)، ووقّعت أول اتفاقية رسمية بين البلدين. كانت المرأة الوحيدة المشاركة كمفاوضة سلام في منطقة البلقان ضمن مؤتمرات سلام دولية بارزة، منها مؤتمر رامبوييه (١٩٩٩). تترأساً شبكة اللوبي النسائي الإقليمي في جنوب شرق أوروبا  منذ عشرين عام (RWLSEE)، وهي عضو في شبكة “نساء يصنعن السلام” (Women Waging Peace). \nDr. Bernedette Muthien is a Research Fellow in the Office of International Affairs at the University of the Free State. With senior roles in academia\, government\, and civil society across South Africa and beyond\, she is a seasoned researcher\, facilitator\, and poet. She has over 200 publications and presentations\, many translated into 17 languages. A Fulbright-Amy Biehl Fellow at Stanford\, she holds advanced degrees in Political Studies from the Universities of Cape Town and Stellenbosch. Bernedette co-founded the African Peace Research and Education Association and serves on multiple international advisory boards focused on peace\, security\, and cultural rights. \nالدكتورة بيرنادت موثين\nالدكتورة بيرنادت موثين باحثة زميلة في مكتب الشؤون الدولية بجامعة فري ستيت. شغلت مناصب رفيعة في الأوساط الأكاديمية والمجتمع المدني والحكومة في جنوب إفريقيا وخارجها، وتُعد باحثة وميسّرة وشاعرة متميزة. لديها أكثر من 200 منشور ومداخلة في مؤتمرات، وقد تُرجم العديد منها إلى 17 لغة. حصلت على زمالة فولبرايت-آمي بيل في جامعة ستانفورد، وتحمل درجات عليا في الدراسات السياسية من جامعتي كيب تاون وستلينبوش. شاركت في تأسيس الرابطة الإفريقية لأبحاث وتعليم السلام، وتعمل في عدة مجالس استشارية دولية تُعنى بالسلام والأمن وحقوق الإنسان والثقافة.

SUMMARY:Proactive Restorative Justice in School Violence Prevention

This PeaceConnect session is $10 for non-MBBI members\, $5 for MBBI Members. \nRegister here!\nAbstract: In this presentation I will share progress in an action-research project that seeks to implement and evaluate an intervention model for the effective prevention of violence and discrimination\, replicable in any high school or higher education institution. The intervention is an experiential workshop con “Proactive Restorative Practices for the Prevention of Violence and Discrimination” that seeks to raise awareness among all members of the community – students\, teachers and administrative staff – regarding what types of behaviors constitute violence and negatively impact coexistence\, based on the exchange of experiences in a safe space for dialogue. The workshop also provides an introduction to proactive restorative practice as an approach to prevention and early response to harmful behaviors. The project incorporates practices and principles of education for peace and restorative justice\, as well as gender\, human rights and masculinity perspectives\, with aim of impacting three root causes of violence and discrimination: (a) environments that reward or tolerate violence\, (b) beliefs and attitudes of superiority linked to structural inequalities\, and (c) lack of collaborative capabilities. I will provide a brief overview of the theoretical framework and pedagogical approach of the workshop offered in different departments of UNAM in the context of the project\, as well as preliminary findings that have emerged\, both qualitatively and quantitatively.\n  \nBio: Mara I. Hernández has more than 20 years of experience as practitioner and academic in the fields of conflict resolution\, mediation\, consensus facilitation\, violence prevention and restorative justice. She holds a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)\, where she specialized in negotiation and democratic theory\, and a Master in Public Administration from Harvard University. She is also a certified mediator from the Harvard Law School. \n \nMara is founder and Executive Director at Diálogo\, Innovación y Cambio (Dialogica)\, an innovation lab and consulting firm in her field of expertise\, and founding member of the Consensus Building Institute Global Network\, established to share expertise in the field among practitioners world wide. She also teaches at UNAM where she has led the implementation of alternative dispute resolution for the Ombuds Office and currently leads an action-research project in violence and discrimination prevention in highschool and higher educación. She has consulted for the UN\, the Inter-American Development Bank\, the National Endowment for Democracy\, the International Center for Transitional Justice\, the Mexican Senate\, the World Bank\, USAID and the Canadian Government\, among others. A key peacebuilder during Sri Lanka’s civil war\, she helped broker the ceasefire between the government and the LTTE and united women across conflict lines. She educates soldiers and leaders on international humanitarian law and promotes UN Resolution 1325 on women\, peace\, and security. Visaka trains women for political leadership and power sharing\, and in 2023 facilitated a historic dialogue between Buddhist monks and the Tamil diaspora\, resulting in the six-point Himalaya Declaration. Her work has earned multiple honors\, including the 2006 Humanitarian Award from InterAction (Washington D.C.)\, the 2022 Human Rights Salutation\, and the 2024 USIP Women Building Peace Award. A nominee for the 2005 collective Nobel Peace Prize\, she has advised the Sri Lankan government and international bodies on reconciliation and human rights. In 2005\, she founded the Awam Cultural Development Foundation to support women’s political participation. Dr. Abu-Osba has played a key role in establishing networks and alliances advocating for women and youth\, particularly during Yemen’s transitional period. During the National Dialogue Conference\, she led advocacy campaigns to amplify women’s voices. She has participated in three rounds of peace negotiations—in Kuwait\, Geneva\, and Sweden—and was among the women invited to the signing of the Riyadh Agreement. She currently serves on the Women’s Advisory Group to the UN Envoy to Yemen and is a member of the political committee from the Riyadh consultations. Since the early stages of the Syrian conflict\, she worked on documenting human rights violations and sexual violence in detention centers. Sema contributed to numerous reports and policy papers on documentation\, gender-sensitive accountability\, and legislation concerning missing persons\, including work with the Conflict and Civicness Research Group at LSE IDEAS. She is a co-founder of multiple initiatives\, such as the ‘We’ Network for WHRD in the MENA region and Urnammu for Justice and Human Rights. With over 26 years of experience in gender\, development\, humanitarian aid\, and peacebuilding\, she has held leadership roles including Executive Director of the Afghan Women’s Educational Center and founding member of the Afghan Women’s Network. She helped establish the women’s quota in Afghanistan’s constitution and launched Roazana\, the country’s first women’s legal support organization. She chaired the Philippine government panel that signed the 2014 Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro\, becoming the first woman to lead and sign a major peace accord with a non-state armed group. They will share the insights\, successes\, and lasting impact of implementing their CMC-approved Peer Mediation Programme across 17 schools\, training 1\,700 students (and counting) to engage positively with conflict. In addition to their firsthand experience\, they will present the latest research from the Civil Mediation Council UK (CMC UK) and insights from a secondary school Head Teacher.\nHoward Le Cornu and Richard Stevens are the founders of The Resolution Centre\, a mediation and leadership practice based in Jersey\, Channel Islands UK. Both have long experience in naval command and leadership\, and bring that calm\, disciplined steadiness into their work with people and systems. They specialise in complex\, multi-party and cross-sector mediation\, working in education\, hospitals and healthcare\, financial services\, maritime\, government and family businesses.  \nTheir Academy supports a simple but demanding belief\, that resolution is the defining quality of leadership. The academy develops leadership maturity from the classroom to the boardroom. It integrates mediation\, coaching and restorative practice into a practical architecture built on autonomy\, belonging\, contribution and coherence. \nThe purpose is to help people feel better\, think better\, act better and ultimately be better. Leaders learn to walk towards challenge with confidence\, build trust and create conditions that show a visible presence in daily behaviour\, with those they lead. \nTheir work ranges from discovery sessions and structured dialogue to full organisational repair and high performance. They help teams recover clarity\, confidence and cohesion when relationships and performance have slipped\, and support leaders and staff to bring their working culture back into harmony in a way that lasts. \nIn just shy of five years\, Richard and Howard have built Jersey’s Peer Mediation programme\, a ‘life-changing’ investment in the emotional education of young people\, building peace\, mediation skills and conflict resolution from the age of 11. Deliberately priced to be accessable to the Island’s relatively large network of free primary schools without compromising on the quality of teaching\, the CMC approved programme has now been adopted in 17 schools and trained 1700 students.

He is the Founder and Executive Director of Re-Imagining New Communities\, a grassroot led peacebuilding organization advancing child-centered peace education\, interfaith collaboration\, and participatory dialogue across Kenya and beyond. He currently serves as a Council Member of the International Peace Bureau (IPB)\, contributing to international efforts that promote disarmament\, conflict prevention\, and cooperative security.

This PeaceConnect session is $10 for non-MBBI members\, $5 for MBBI Members. \nRegister here!\nBios of the Speaker:\n\n \nHeather Edge is the Education and Training Coordinator for the Youth Restorative Justice Program.  She holds a Bachelor’s in Political Science and a Master’s in Conflict and Dispute Resolution from the University of Oregon.  She is currently working in Douglas and Coos Counties to establish youth restorative justice programs in schools and youth justice departments.  When not working\, she enjoys spending time on her farm with the horses\, goats\, chickens and dogs and doing a little gardening. \n \nDarren Reiley (he/him) holds Masters degrees in English Literature and Folklore and has spent the past 25 years working in and adjacent to Education\, having taught at the University\, middle school\, high school\, and elementary levels\, especially in the area of peace and conflict education.  From this experience\, and moved by the teachings of his Elders\, he helped to develop the current Youth Restorative Justice program at CDR\, including both Restorative Diversion with the Juvenile Courts and Restorative Practice implementation models in Schools. He served as the Youth RJ Manager for the last seven years before stepping into his current role as Executive Director.  He spends as much of his other time as possible with his daughters and his wife\, in the woods\, teaching/ learning Aikido at the Y\, writing and dreaming ahead.
