SUMMARY:Becoming an Island of Peace: The Ultimate Gift of Mediation in Aruba
DESCRIPTION:Join Sophie Bérubé for this dynamic PeaceConnect conversation. This 90-minute conversation event will be on June 22nd\, 2022\, at 2:00 pm EDT (UTC -4). Please use the Time Zone Converter to determine when this engaging conversation will be in your time zone. \nRegister here!\nSpeaker Bio \n\nSophie Bérubé has been a member of the Quebec Bar Association since 1999. After practising Labour and Employment Law in Montreal with the renowned firm Fasken Martineau\, she worked in various fields such as communications\, journalism\, real estate and architecture before embracing her passion for mediation full time.  \n\nInspired by her recent years evolving between two little diverse communities in Montréal and Aruba\, and passionate about co-creating solutions between individuals from different social\, cultural and economic contexts\, Sophie started the grass-rooted initiatives The Windsong Project and IMC for Peace and Family. IMC for Peace and Family offers  programs and retreats meant to democratise peacemaking\, celebrate and enhance  the already existing mediation processes in local and indigenous communities\, and bring a more natural and family-oriented humanistic approach to international mediation.\n \nBy taking a dive into diverse intimate realities with trust and transparency\, mostly with the help of artists\, healers and local peace activists\, the social entrepreneur was inspired to create a new kind of cultural awakening based on universal values and good music. The Windsong project is the Peace and Arts twin of IMC\, with an annual festival and artist residencies in Aruba and Montreal. Headquarters are situated at The Core of Aruba\, a local cooperative initiative. www.thecoreofaruba.com Bérubé also co-founded in 2017 the organisation CAP to help families and judicial institutions fight against parental alienation. The emergency booklet she conceived for parents dealing with difficult separations helped more than 7000 families and  all the proceeds helped the foundation activities. \nSince 2011\, she has published many novels\, including the best-seller “Sans Antécédent” on the subject of perception in domestic violence. She also published several short stories and nonfictional  books.  Her upcoming essay “The Miracle of Separation” co-written with mediator Leanne Greenberg will be published in early 2023\, opening new creative possibilities for parties going through painful processes.

SUMMARY:Action Listening: Embedding Feedback to Strengthen Relationships Based on Trust and Mutuality
DESCRIPTION:Join Dinah Sandoval for this dynamic PeaceConnect conversation. This 90-minute conversation event will be on June 7th\, 2022\, at 4:00 pm EDT (UTC -4). Please use the Time Zone Converter to determine when this engaging conversation will be in your time zone. \nRegister here!\nSpeaker Bio \nDinah Sandoval is a current Rotary Peace Fellow at the University of Bradford in England. Before her studies\, she worked with Root Change\, a non-profit and international development lab based in Washington DC for the last four years primarily leading and operationalizing the Community Independence Initiative\, a peer driven and asset based approach to empower communities to increase economic\, emotional\, and social resilience in Mexico\, Colombia and the Philippines. At Root change\, Dinah has sharpened her skills leading in-person or virtual workshops and training using highly participatory and creative facilitation methods. Dinah has also helped transform organizations into learning institutions by embedding feedback and lean experimentation.   \nBefore joining the team at Root Change\, Dinah led a community health and volunteer program in the highlands and jungle regions of Peru for two and half years with the Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children (FIMRC). Dinah worked alongside agrarian and indigenous communities to design interventions that addressed pressing health issues affecting children such as anemia\, parasitosis\, and malnutrition.  Apart from embedding preventative health programs within local communities\, community based organizations\, and local government\, Dinah spearheaded a collective approach with the ministry of health and other local affiliates to provide mobile clinics including vaccination campaigns in hard to reach populations.   \nHer interest in community health grew while working as a volunteer for the United States Peace Corps in Botswana for three years. Her first two years at the Peace Corps\, Dinah worked with a community health program addressing HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis with the San community. Frustrated with the issues of transportation that hindered progress on various health issues\, Dinah with local stakeholders in her village of Shakawe\, led a half marathon\, 5K and health expo bringing people from all over Botswana. The event got the attention of the private sector leading to the procurement of a mobile clinic to fill a very important health gap.  In her third year with the Peace Corps\, Dinah helped build the capacity of a national foundation by setting up a grantmaking process focused on early childhood development. That same year\, Dinah built knowledge management processes for the Southern Africa Regional Environmental Program led by Chemonics International and USAID.   \nGiven her experience working on grassroots capacity building projects in Southern Africa and Latin America\, Dinah brings a local perspective to the forefront of her work. On weekends\, Dinah can be found exploring towns in the Yorkshire area or hiking at a nearby park.

SUMMARY:Interrogating Elections in Africa: Are There Alternatives?
DESCRIPTION:Women’s International Peace Centre (The Peace Centre) formerly Isis-Women’s International Cross-Cultural Exchange (Isis–WICCE) in partnership with Mediators Beyond Borders International (MBBI)\,\, Food and Climate\, Io: Facilitating Spaces for Feminist Conversations and the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR) invite you to a discussion interrogating elections in Africa on April 27\, 2022\, at 3:00 p.m (EAT). \nElections are seen as a key ingredient of democratic governance. The discipline of acquiring power through an election is assumed to make governments accountable to citizens\, and thereby confer legitimacy- but do they? The current nature of elections or politics makes it hard for women to be in that space of power. \nLet’s start a series of conversations on how elections can be organized differently to allow women’s meaningful participation and influence the political process in the African region.

SUMMARY:Pieces of the Puzzle: Exploring the Intersections of Transformative Peace Building with Citizen Assemblies
DESCRIPTION:Join Lauren Higgins and Rahmin Sarabi of Democracy Together for a dynamic conversation filled with case stories and a lively discussion with the MBBI community  on the intersections of deliberative democracy\, conflict transformation\, participatory democracy\, and community organizing. Can we find paths forward in ways that unite us enough to meet the scale of our challenges? This 90-minute conversation event will be on April 13th\, 2022\, at 2:00 pm EDT (UTC -4). Please use the Time Zone Converter to determine when this engaging conversation will be in your time zone. \nWe are in a time of great change as socio-political and ecological pressures escalate alongside the perennial challenges of housing\, health\, education\, climate\, and economy. All the while\, our democracy faces increasing challenges with polarization and trust between public and government near historic lows. \nWhat if\, on our trickiest challenges\, we could as a community create common ground policy proposals and recommendations with 70% or greater approval? What if\, beyond the policies\, community-driven visions could be generated that guided action across unlikely allies in the business sector\, non-profits\, gov’t\, and everyday citizens? And what if\, through the process\, trust was restored and built across the different parts of our community? \nCivic Assemblies are a promising innovation in deliberative democracy that have been applied successfully on extremely divisive issues (such as abortion in Ireland)\, yet are little known in the US. \nCivic Assemblies (often called Citizens’ Assemblies or Panels) are a demonstrated method with hundreds of examples around the world where they’ve helped communities make sense of divisive\, intractable issues and find shared paths forward. Though relatively under the radar in the US\, they’ve been applied to complex topics like immigration\, same-sex marriage\, and abortion\, generating breakthroughs at the policy and relational level. They are increasingly seen as a critical part of a healthy\, resilient 21st century democracy that can handle complex\, divisive challenges\, with calls from organizations such as the OECD to further embed and institutionalize their role in democracies around the world.  \nWhile  inspiring\, many of these Civic Assemblies have not had transformative orientations to conflict.   Our questions? How might the gifts of the mediation community connect  with these emerging capacities for civic scale conversations and decision making that are happening around the world with deliberation\, public participation\,  and even digital democracy? How can we take the transformative capacities of peace building and conflict resolution and bring them into places of civic  judgment and decision making/ policy making? \nRegister here!\nSpeakers Bios \n\nRahmin Sarabi\, co-director of Democracy Together\, brings a background in human-centered design\, group process\, and systemic thinking\, with 15+ years leading collaborative teams at mission-driven startups and nonprofits. He is a trained facilitator and part of the team that recently produced the Citizens’ Panel on COVID-19\, which brought 30 Michiganders together to develop common ground policy recommendations that transcended the divisions in the state. He is a senior staff member at Commonweal\, which has a 40+ year history of work in healing\, the environment\, arts\, education\, justice and resilience.  \n\nLauren Higgins\, co-director of Democracy Together\, is active in civic conflict resolution and restorative justice efforts in her current home of Kansas City\, Missouri. For 10+ years she has facilitated multi-stakeholder projects and produced large scale events focused on social innovation\, public imagination\, and the new economy. As senior staff at the Impact Hub Network\, she developed democratic governance convenings to help 100 communities align their collective impact. Currently\, at the Kauffman Foundation\, she designs innovation and capacity building programs to advance systemic approaches to inclusive prosperity. \n
