The discipline of acquiring power through an election is assumed to make governments accountable to citizens\, and thereby confer legitimacy- but do they? The current nature of elections or politics makes it hard for women to be in that space of power. \nLet’s start a series of conversations on how elections can be organized differently to allow women’s meaningful participation and influence the political process in the African region.

STAYTON recently retired as Chairman of United States Infrastructure Corporation (USIC) where he was a founding shareholder and President and CEO from 2008 – 2014. Mr. Stayton currently serves on a number of Boards\, both for-profit and not-for-profit. \nFrom 2002-2007\, he served as Chief of Staff for the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP)\, the largest international humanitarian agency in the world. WFP operates one of the largest logistics businesses in the world and is recognized by the international community as the world’s leader in emergency response capacity. Most notable emergency response programs implemented were in Afghanistan and Iraq after the Taliban and Hussein regimes fell\, the Indian Ocean tsunami\, civil war in the Sudan including Darfur\, the Kashmir earthquake\, and numerous droughts and civil conflicts in Sub-Saharan Africa\, and humanitarian crises in the Middle East & North Korea. \nPrior to his tenure at WFP\, Stayton held senior management positions with NiSource from 1995-2000 and was Director of Public Works & Enterprise Development for the City of Indianapolis from 1993-1995. Before that Mr. Stayton was engaged in venture capital activities and began his business career with Ford Motor Company in 1973\, after 3 years as a U.S. Army officer. Mr. Stayton earned a BA from Wabash College and MS from George Washington University.

SUMMARY:Pieces of the Puzzle: Exploring the Intersections of Transformative Peace Building with Citizen Assemblies
DESCRIPTION:Join Lauren Higgins and Rahmin Sarabi of Democracy Together for a dynamic conversation filled with case stories and a lively discussion with the MBBI community  on the intersections of deliberative democracy\, conflict transformation\, participatory democracy\, and community organizing. Can we find paths forward in ways that unite us enough to meet the scale of our challenges? This 90-minute conversation event will be on April 13th\, 2022\, at 2:00 pm EDT (UTC -4). All the while\, our democracy faces increasing challenges with polarization and trust between public and government near historic lows. \nWhat if\, on our trickiest challenges\, we could as a community create common ground policy proposals and recommendations with 70% or greater approval? What if\, beyond the policies\, community-driven visions could be generated that guided action across unlikely allies in the business sector\, non-profits\, gov’t\, and everyday citizens? And what if\, through the process\, trust was restored and built across the different parts of our community? \nCivic Assemblies are a promising innovation in deliberative democracy that have been applied successfully on extremely divisive issues (such as abortion in Ireland)\, yet are little known in the US. \nCivic Assemblies (often called Citizens’ Assemblies or Panels) are a demonstrated method with hundreds of examples around the world where they’ve helped communities make sense of divisive\, intractable issues and find shared paths forward. Though relatively under the radar in the US\, they’ve been applied to complex topics like immigration\, same-sex marriage\, and abortion\, generating breakthroughs at the policy and relational level. They are increasingly seen as a critical part of a healthy\, resilient 21st century democracy that can handle complex\, divisive challenges\, with calls from organizations such as the OECD to further embed and institutionalize their role in democracies around the world.  \nWhile  inspiring\, many of these Civic Assemblies have not had transformative orientations to conflict.   Our questions? How might the gifts of the mediation community connect  with these emerging capacities for civic scale conversations and decision making that are happening around the world with deliberation\, public participation\,  and even digital democracy? How can we take the transformative capacities of peace building and conflict resolution and bring them into places of civic  judgment and decision making/ policy making? \nRegister here!\nSpeakers Bios \n\nRahmin Sarabi\, co-director of Democracy Together\, brings a background in human-centered design\, group process\, and systemic thinking\, with 15+ years leading collaborative teams at mission-driven startups and nonprofits. He is a trained facilitator and part of the team that recently produced the Citizens’ Panel on COVID-19\, which brought 30 Michiganders together to develop common ground policy recommendations that transcended the divisions in the state. He is a senior staff member at Commonweal\, which has a 40+ year history of work in healing\, the environment\, arts\, education\, justice and resilience.  \n\nLauren Higgins\, co-director of Democracy Together\, is active in civic conflict resolution and restorative justice efforts in her current home of Kansas City\, Missouri. For 10+ years she has facilitated multi-stakeholder projects and produced large scale events focused on social innovation\, public imagination\, and the new economy. As senior staff at the Impact Hub Network\, she developed democratic governance convenings to help 100 communities align their collective impact. Currently\, at the Kauffman Foundation\, she designs innovation and capacity building programs to advance systemic approaches to inclusive prosperity. \n

Previously she was Chair of Conflict Studies at Ulster University in Northern Ireland where she was Director of UNU/INCORE\, a research body examining the many ways in which conflicts can be ended\, and peaceful diversity sustained in divided societies http://www.incore.ulst.ac.uk/ .
