SUMMARY:Voices for Change: Syrian Perspectives on Promoting Human Rights in Syria

As women’s rights are inseparable from human rights\, this month’s series will feature prominent Syrian human rights activists who will share their insights on the current state of human rights in Syria.  \nTo this day\, over a decade after the start of the revolution and just months following the fall of the Assad regime\, Syria is left to reckon with the widespread human rights violations\, displacement\, and economic hardships. On the frontline are brave women who spearhead the movement demanding equal rights and advocating for increased representation and fair policies.  \nOur speakers Hanan Zahr El-Din\, Walaa Al-Akel\, Muna Abdul-Salam will assess the current landscape of human rights work\, evaluate the challenges and needs\, and discuss the role of civil society and international organizations in shaping the future of human rights in Syria.  \nThis event will be facilitated by Rajaa Altalli\, CCSD Co-Founder\, and Prabha Sankaranarayan\, MBBI President and CEO and will be translated in Arabic and English. \nفي شهر آذار، نحيي اليوم العالمي للمرأة وذكرى الثورة السورية. وبما أن حقوق المرأة لا تنفصل عن حقوق الإنسان، سنخصص لقاء هذا الشهر من سلسلة أصوات التغيير للحوار مع ناشطات سوريات بارزات في مجال حقوق الإنسان، حيث سيشاركن رؤاهن حول الوضع الراهن لحقوق الإنسان في سوريا.  \nفبالرغم من مرور أكثر من عقد على انطلاقة الثورة، وبعد أشهر فقط من سقوط نظام الأسد، لا تزال سوريا تواجه تحديات جسيمة من انتهاكات واسعة لحقوق الإنسان والنزوح والأزمات الاقتصادية المتفاقمة. وفي الخطوط الأمامية للحراك المطالب بالمساواة، تقف النساء للدفاع عن تعزيز التمثيل العادل، واعتماد سياسات منصفة. \n ستناقش الناشطات حنان زهر الدين، وولاء العاقل، ومنى عبد السلام واقع العمل الحقوقي اليوم، وتقيّيم أبرز التحديات والاحتياجات، بالإضافة إلى دور المجتمع المدني والمنظمات الدولية في رسم مستقبل حقوق الإنسان في سوريا.  \nستُيسر هذا اللقاء كل من رجاء التلي، المؤسسة المشاركة لمركز المجتمع المدني والديمقراطية، وبرابها شنكرنارايان، رئيسة مجلس إدارة والمديرة التنفيذية لمؤسسة وسطاء خارج الحدود الدولية. ستتوفر الترجمة باللغتين العربية والإنجليزية. \nSpeakers: \nHanan Zahr El-Din: Lawyer\, politician\, human rights activist \nA lawyer and human rights activist specializing in international law and human rights\, with extensive experience in advocating for women’s rights and reforming discriminatory laws. She has contributed to shadow reports for the CEDAW Committee and helped draft constitutional principles with a gender perspective. She has held leadership roles in several human rights organizations\, including the Syrian Women’s Network and “Together for Women’s Issues.” With a background in media\, she has written articles on women’s issues and participated in training programs on constitution-building\, negotiation\, transitional justice\, and international humanitarian law. Since 2011\, she has been actively engaged in human rights and political activism\, striving for justice and democracy in Syria. \nحنان زهر الدين: محامية و سياسية و ناشطة\nمحامية وناشطة حقوقية متخصصة في القانون الدولي وحقوق الإنسان، لها مسيرة طويلة في الدفاع عن حقوق المرأة والمساهمة في إصلاح القوانين التمييزية، من خلال مشاركتها في إعداد تقارير الظل للجنة السيداو وصياغة مبادئ دستورية من منظور جندري. شغلت مناصب قيادية في عدة منظمات حقوقية، منها “شبكة المرأة السورية” و”معًا لدعم قضايا المرأة”. لها خبرة في الإعلام وكتابة المقالات حول قضايا المرأة، كما شاركت في برامج تدريبية حول بناء الدساتير، التفاوض، العدالة الانتقالية، والقانون الدولي الإنساني. منذ 2011، نشطت في الحراك الحقوقي والسياسي، وتسعى لتحقيق العدالة والديمقراطية في سوريا.  \nWalaa Al-Akel: Human Rights Advocate \nWalaa Al-Akel is a human rights advocate with extensive experience in transitional justice\, psychosocial support\, and human rights documentation. She has worked with various organizations facilitating justice sessions\, supporting survivors\, and documenting violations. She is a founding member of the Survivors’ Network and plays a dynamic role in civil society leadership. With a diploma in Administrative and Financial Sciences from Damascus University and ongoing studies in engineering\, she has completed multiple training programs in psychosocial support\, strategic planning\, and crisis response. Walaa remains committed to justice\, survivor support\, and strengthening civil society in Syria. \nولاء العاقل ناشطة في مجال حقوق الإنسان\nولاء العاقل ناشطة في مجال حقوق الإنسان تتمتع بخبرة واسعة في العدالة الانتقالية والدعم النفسي الاجتماعي وتوثيق الانتهاكات. عملت مع عدة منظمات في تيسير جلسات العدالة، ودعم الناجين، وتوثيق الانتهاكات. وهي عضو مؤسس في شبكة الناجيات وتلعب دورًا فاعلًا في قيادة المجتمع المدني. حاصلة على دبلوم في العلوم الإدارية والمالية من جامعة دمشق وتتابع دراستها في الهندسة، كما أكملت العديد من البرامج التدريبية في الدعم النفسي الاجتماعي، والتخطيط الاستراتيجي، والاستجابة للأزمات. تواصل ولاء التزامها بالسعي لتحقيق العدالة، ودعم الناجين، وتعزيز المجتمع المدني في سوريا. \nMuna Abdul-Salam: Activist and Educator \nMuna is feminist activist and educator dedicated to women’s empowerment and gender justice. She is the founder and director of Rose Organization for Support and Empowerment and a founding member of Sara Organization for Combating Violence Against Women\, where she served as Executive Director and led the legal committee supporting survivors of abuse. Muna has played a key role in organizing and leading initiatives on gender-based violence\, child marriage\, women’s political participation\, and youth life skills. Through her advocacy and leadership\, she continues to champion women’s rights and social justice. \nمنى عبد السلام:‏ مربية وناشطة نسوية \n‏مربية وناشطة نسوية، من مؤسسي منظمة روز للدعم والتمكين و مديرتها التنفيذية. عملت في المجال النسوي المدني ومن المؤسسين لمنظمة سارة المناهضة للعنف ضد المرأة  حيث شغلت منصب المديرة التنفيذية لسنوات عدة وترأست اللجنة القانونية متابعة قضايا المعنفات. نظمت وشاركت في العديد من المشاريع وحملات التوعية التي تعنى بحقوق المرأة ومناصرة قضاياها بما في ذلك العنف القائم على النوع الاجتماعي والتصدي لزواج القاصرات وتعزيز المشاركة السياسية للمرأة وتنمية المهارات الحياتية لليافعين واليافعات.  تواصل منى الدفاع عن قضايا المرأة والعمل من أجل مجتمع أكثر عدالة و مساواة.
