Erica Ariel Fox
Erica Ariel Fox, JD, teaches negotiation at Harvard Law School and is the founder of the Global Negotiation Insight Institute. Internationally recognized as a pioneer in integrating great wisdom traditions and spiritual practices into the negotiation and conflict field, she works with business and public sector leaders to build consensus, improve communication, facilitate change, and mediate disputes. In recent years, she has worked extensively with organizational leaders and work teams to address conflict and improve collaboration and performance.
Fox has been teaching with the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School since 1996, and builds her work on the teaching of her mentors, including Robert Mnookin, Frank E.A. Sander, Michael Wheeler, Roger Fisher, and William Ury. In addition to leading the Global Negotiation Insight Institute, Erica Ariel Fox also serves on the Harvard Mediation Program’s advisory board, the board of directors of Mediation Works Incorporated, and is a partner at Mobius Executive Leadership.
Erica Ariel Fox’s research focuses on barriers to self-advocacy in difficult negotiations, and ways to overcome these barriers. She founded the Global Negotiation Insight Institute to help merge the fields of negotiation and conflict management with philosophy, spirituality, and psychology. She is currently writing a book based on her article, “Alone in the Hallway: Challenges to Effective Self-Representation in Negotiation,” which appeared in the first issue of the Harvard Negotiation Law Review.
Mr. Mahuad served as President of Ecuador from 1998 until 2000, capping a career of nearly 20 years in Ecuadorian politics, which included two terms as Mayor of Quito and member of the National Congress.He is the co-founder and Senior Adviser of the International Negotiation Initiative, at Harvard Law School.
Mr. Mahuad is a recipient of the World Wild Fund Gift to the Earth Award (1999) for his policies on environmental protection and is a Nobel Peace Price Nominee (1999) for the signing of a definitive Peace Treaty with neighbor country Peru. Mr. Mahuad holds a Masters degree in Public Administration from Harvard University, as well as a J.D. degree from the Catholic University of Ecuador.
Reflecting on his experiences, Mr. Mahuad currently researches and teaches negotiation, leadership, and the challenges facing struggling democracies in the age of globalization.
Mr. Mahuad’s long-term collaboration with Professors Roger Fisher and Daniel Shapiro in the theory and practice of successful negotiations is reflected in his contributed chapter to the book “Beyond Reason: Using Emotions As You Negotiate” that illustrates the practical application of the core concerns approach to a challenging international negotiation.
Bernard Mayer, Ph.D., Professor, Werner Institute for Negotiation and Dispute Resolution, Creighton University, is an internationally-recognized leader in the field of conflict resolution. Bernie has facilitated many complex and controversial environmental conflicts, commercial and organizational disputes, interpersonal conflicts, public decision-making processes, and has an extensive background in family mediation as well. Bernie is a founding partner of CDR Associates, a pioneering conflict intervention firm, located in Boulder, Colorado.He has provided consultation, mediation, facilitation and training for many federal, state and local agencies including the U.S. EPA, the Departments of the Interior, Defense, Health and Human Services, Labor, Agriculture and Homeland Security, as well as for numerous governmental departments and agencies in Canada. Bernie also has extensive international experience in setting up dispute resolution programs and working on complex issues such as ethnic relations, conflicts between governments, corporations, and non-governmental organizations, and community and family disputes. He has worked in Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Indonesia, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, England, Ireland, Canada and many other countries.
Bernie is the author of many books and articles including The Dynamics of Conflict Resolution: A Practitioner’s Guide (Jossey-Bass/Wiley, 2000), Beyond Neutrality: Confronting the Crisis in Conflict Resolution ( Jossey-Bass/Wiley, 2004), and Staying With Conflict: A Strategic Approach to Ongoing Disputes (Jossey-Bass/,Wiley, 2009). Both Beyond Neutrality and Staying With Conflict were named as the outstanding book of the year by the CPR International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution.
Ambassador John W. McDonald
Ambassador John W. McDonald is a lawyer, diplomat, former international civil servant, development expert and peacebuilder, concerned about world social, economic and ethnic problems. He spent twenty years of his career in Western Europe and the Middle East (Berlin, Frankfurt, Bonn, Paris, Ankara, Tehran, Karachi, and Cairo), and worked for sixteen years on United Nations economic and social affairs. From 1974 to 1978. he was Deputy Director-General of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in Geneva, Switzerland.After 40 years in the U.S. Foreign Service, he became a law professor at the George Washington University (1987) and then the first President of the Iowa Peace Institute in Grinnell, Iowa (1988-1992). He is the co-founder (1992) and Chairman and CEO of the Institute for Multi-Track Diplomacy, in Washington D.C. which focuses on national and international ethnic conflicts.
He serves on the Advisory Board of George Mason University’s Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution (ICAR), and teaches regularly a course on conflict resolution and post-war peacebuilding at the National Defense University in Washington, D.C. In 1982 he founded the non-governmental organization Global Water and he is deeply involved in the U.N. Millennium Goals for Clean Drinking Water and Sanitation and global environmental issues. He has visited 102 countries and lectures frequently in the US and abroad.
Ambassador McDonald holds both a B.A. and a J.D. degree from the University of Illinois, and graduated from the National War College in 1967. He also received numerous awards and several Honorary Degrees from various universities across the country. He was appointed Ambassador twice by President Carter and twice by President Reagan to represent the United States at various UN World Conferences. His most recent book is The Shifting Grounds of Conflict and Peacebuilding: Stories and Lessons.
- Ashok is Meta-Culture’s founder and Executive Director. Ashok is a conflict resolution professional who came back to India after ten years in the United States working as a mediator, trainer and facilitator. Over the years, as a Conflict Management Consultant, Senior Trainer and Director of Training, he has conducted hundreds of workshops in negotiation, communication, conflict resolution, thinking skills and cross-cultural/diversity training all around the United States, India and in Europe. He has been a lead mediator and has directed a successful organizational conflict resolution program in Cambridge, Massachusetts, successfully mediating hundreds of disputes. As a professional facilitator, Ashok facilitated dialogues between extremely polarized groups both in the corporate and the public sphere. His experience ranges from working with Fortune 500 companies, to mid-sized organizations, governmental and non-governmental groups and educational institutions.
Ashok has a Master’s degree in Critical and Creative Thinking from the University of Massachusetts, Boston and advanced training in Negotiation and Conflict Resolution from leading institutes in the US. As the Executive Director of Meta-Culture he has extensively trained and consulted for companies such as the World Bank, Infosys Technologies, Wipro Technologies, Accenture, Coke, Nokia, Bharti Airtel, Andritz, LG, ANZ Banking Group, General Motors and others. He also been actively involved in advising senior management of leading Indian and international companies on relationship management, conflict resolution and conflict systems design.
Ashok is particularly interested in exploring issues related to individual and group identity in conflict and the role that aesthetic and moral sensibilities can play in the resolution of conflict. He is currently studying and experimenting with the types of skills, dispositions and sensibilities that practitioners of CR can benefit from, using his own organization as a laboratory. Julia Roig is an attorney, skilled mediator, facilitator and trainer with ten years of diverse international management experience. Currently she is the Executive Director at the Partners for Democratic Change, an international organization committed to building sustainable local capacity to advance civil society and a culture of change and conflict management worldwide.From 2006 to 2008, she served as Serbia Country Director for the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative. Ms. Roig is also past Chair of the International Section of Association for Conflict Resolution and a member of the Editorial Board of Conflict Resolution Quarterly.
She has significant experience in systems design, program management, community outreach and training and has expertise in facilitating professional briefings and educational courses for community members, attorneys, judges, administrators, federal executives, and foreign ministers.
She has authored multiple case studies, project reports, articles, industry newsletters, and grant proposals and specializes in the evaluation of international assistance programs and impact assessments.
She holds a J.D. from The George Washington University School of Law. She is fluent in Spanish and proficient in French.
As the founder and CEO of the Core Solutions Group, John has pioneered mediation and high quality training in business, the professions and commerce in Scotland and elsewhere.Described in Legal 500 as “universally regarded as Scotland’s finest mediator” and in Band 1 in Best of the UK in Chambers Guide, John has been involved in a broad range of disputes in the public and private sectors in the UK and abroad.
He is an internationally recognized coach and facilitator in the fields of negotiation, mediation and communication, and has worked with senior executives, judges, top athletes and parliamentarians.
He is described as “one of the best teachers of mediation”. He became a Queen’s Counsel in 1999, is a Visiting Professor at Strathclyde University and, as the first Director of Training and Education in the Faculty of Advocates from 1994 to 2002, designed and led the Scottish Bar’s award-winning advocacy skills program.
He is a faculty member with CEDR and trained in negotiation at Harvard University. He was named Specialist of the Year at the Scottish Legal Awards in 2003 and Mediator of the Year at the Law Awards of Scotland 2009.
Professor Susskind is one of the country’s most experienced public and environmental dispute mediators and a leading figure in the dispute resolution field. He has mediated more than fifty complex disputes related to the siting of controversial facilities, the setting of public health and safety standards, the formulation and implementation of development plans and projects, and conflicts among racial and ethnic groups — serving on occasion as a special court-appointed master.Professor Susskind is founder and for thirteen years President of the Consensus Building Institute (CBI), a not-for-profit organization that provides mediation and dispute system design services to public and private clients worldwide. CBI has facilitated the worldwide Policy Dialogue on Trade and the Environment that brings senior WTO officials together with leaders of environmental organizations around the world. CBI staff have also mediated hospital relocation plans and formulation of state health policy reforms, evaluated mediation and dispute resolution efforts for a variety of federal and state agencies, organized training programs for union leaders and their management counterparts, and initiated the Program for Young Negotiators and the Workable Peace Program to teach public school teachers how to teach conflict management and interethnic dispute handling skills to their middle school and high school students. Since 1993, CBI has worked in more than 15 countries and 30 states and provinces.
Professor Susskind joined the faculty of the MIT Department of Urban Studies and Planning in 1971. He served first as Associate Head and then as Head of that Department from 1974 through 1982. He was appointed full professor in 1986 and Ford Professor of Urban & Environmental Planning in 1995. As head of the Environmental Policy Group in the School of Architecture and Planning at MIT, he currently teaches four courses (Negotiation and Dispute Resolution in the Public Sector (11.255), International Environmental Negotiation (11.364) taught jointly with the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, Multi-party Negotiation (11.257) taught jointly with Harvard Law School, and Graduate Introduction to Environmental Policy and Planning(11.601)), oversees a research budget of approximately $250,000 annually, and supervises more than a dozen masters and doctoral dissertations a year.
Lawrence Susskind was born in New York City in 1947. He graduated from Columbia University in 1968 with a B.A. in English Literature and Sociology. He received his Masters of City Planning from MIT in 1970 and his Ph.D. in Urban Planning from MIT in 1973.
