People-Centered Peacebuilding in the 21st Century

Coinciding with the 63rd session of the UN Commission on the States of Women (CSW63) in March 2019, the Mediators Beyond Borders International—New York Regional Group (MBBI—NY) hosted a special event featuring Prabha Sankaranarayan, President and CEO of MBBI as she led an interactive discussion on the topic of People-Centered Peacebuilding in the 21st Century.

In addition to MBBI—NY members, the event was open to the public and was attended by MBBI global members, a CSW63 Kenyan delegation, and members of MBBI—NY’s partner, the CUNY Dispute Resolution Center at John Jay College. Attendees “left the discussion deeply moved and inspired by everybody’s passion.” (Simone Drost)

It was a memorable evening. Prabha’s mind mapping activity galvanized people to think deeper and mobilized to act. One thing that stood out for me: this presentation displayed how inclusive leadership looks like—inspirational but giving space to others. It was open, participatory, and collaborative. It energized people to share their own ideas, build on each other’s views, and bring up major ideas and their interconnections on the topic of 21st century people-centered peacebuilding. The activity displayed the core belief of MBBI to consult with the community, engage them and build further on it to make it sustainable. (Archana, MBBI—Canada member)
