As the world considered ways to coordinate the global response to the COVID pandemic, the climate change action plan negotiations from the United Nations have been delayed. How might we consider climate diplomacy in a world where people may become more hesitant to live a low carbon intensity lifestyle due to fear of cities and public transport? Might there be opportunities to consider science with greater care following the pandemic which could open other avenues for joint gains for climate change mitigation? How might we link ecological health to climate change negotiations most constructively in 2021 and beyond?

Professor Saleem H. Ali is the director of the Minerals, Materials and Society Program and Blue and Gold Distinguished Professor of Energy and the Environment at the University of Delaware. He is also a senior fellow at Columbia University’s Center on Sustainable Investment. Selected as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2011, he also serves on the United Nations International Resource Panel and the Science Panel of the Global Environment Facility, the world’s largest multilateral trust fund for the environment held in trusteeship by the World Bank. Professor Ali received his doctorate in environmental planning from MIT, a master’s in environmental law and policy from Yale University and a bachelor’s in chemistry, summa cum laude, from Tufts University. His books include Environmental Diplomacy (with Larry Susskind, Oxford University Press) and Treasures of the Earth: Need, Greed and a Sustainable Future (Yale University Press).

She has attended the Conference of Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) twice, the COP 23 in Bonn, Germany, and the COP 24 in Katowice, Poland. She first joined as a member of MBBI 5 years ago when she was working on a collaborative group focusing on climate change. She is also active in the Children & Youth Alternative Dispute Resolution Working Group, and United Nations Multilateral Working Group. She considers it important to work with young people to develop peaceful models for climate change dispute resolution.

Charalee is most interested in climate change as a global issue. Her advocacy in finding solutions revolves around her wide academic expertise; She is a part of the faculty at Euclid University and focuses on international law, climate change, and dispute resolution. Further, she has authored multiple articles on the legal structures of the Paris Agreement, the US’s decision to leave the Paris Agreement, international law in fostering cooperation on the Paris Agreement, and international piracy, one of her largest selection of articles is about the combination of creative arts and climate change.
